About Ed

I have worked in genuinely demanding settings - managing large classrooms in a South African state school, supporting clients accused of crime at police stations, and with CFOs managing multi-million pound foreign exchange payments. So I know how to help people who are under real pressure. Obviously, exams are highly stressful.

I'm here to guide you through that and get the results you need. That does not just mean good grades, but building an accessible way of problem-solving you can carry into further study and work.

Finally, as a new father, I am especially motivated to help parents give their children the best advantage they can. It is exactly what I would want and do in their position.

GCSE English and Maths; A-level English (11 - 18 years old)

Teaching method
My approach depends on the student and what they're working towards.

Where there's time, I teach by asking rather than telling. Leaning on a Socratic method, answers will be drawn out through thoughtful and sensitive questioning. It is important to first understand how a student is thinking then offer solutions, rather than have them reverse-engineer a "right answer" they don't fully understand. Students remember and apply reasoning they've arrived at themselves.

Where a deadline means we need quick results, I adjust. In that situation the mark scheme is the most useful tool we have: we go through exactly what examiners reward, how answers need to be structured, and practical ways to remember each approach under exam pressure.

Some students may need a mixture of both, and I'll be upfront about which one is most appropriate where needed.

Teaching experience
Spent a year teaching English and Maths to GCSE and A-level students at a state school in South Africa, with classes of fifty students or more.

Other experience
Spent seven years working in client facing services across finance and law.

I should be clear that this is my first time offering one-to-one private tutoring, though I'm comfortable in front of students and at explaining things clearly. I'm also a humanities graduate with a Distinction-graded postgraduate diploma in law. Currently, I am studying towards SQE1 qualification while tutoring.
