About Javier
My name is Javier Hernandez, and I was born in Maracay, Venezuela. After completing high school, I moved to New York in 2021 in search of greater educational and socio-economic opportunities. The transition to a new country was not easy—it required navigating legal processes, adapting to a new culture, and learning how to thrive in a completely different environment. Through perseverance and determination, I was able to enroll at LaGuardia Community College in March 2024, where I am currently pursuing an Associate’s degree in Programming and Software Development, with an expected graduation in 2026.
Growing up in Venezuela taught me the value of resilience, hard work, and community. I learned early on that success is rarely achieved alone, and the support I received throughout my journey inspired me to give back whenever I can. I am fluent in both Spanish and English, which allows me to connect easily with people from diverse backgrounds, especially within New York’s multicultural environment. Being an outgoing and friendly person has helped me build meaningful relationships and create spaces where people feel comfortable, supported, and heard.
My passion for technology, creativity, and problem-solving is what led me to enroll in LaGuardia for Programming and Software Development. I am deeply interested in building digital products, solving real-world problems through code, and creating software that can make a meaningful impact. After completing my associate’s degree, I plan to transfer to the City College of New York (CCNY) to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and continue developing my technical and professional skills.
As a peer mentor, my role is to serve as a bridge between students and professors, helping to ensure that students feel supported, informed, and confident navigating college life. I understand how overwhelming higher education can feel, especially for first-generation students, immigrants, or those unfamiliar with campus resources. Through my experience at LaGuardia, I have learned how to access academic support, tutoring, advising, and other essential services, and I take pride in guiding others toward those same opportunities. My goal as a mentor is to help students, help them overcome obstacles, and remind them that they are not alone in their journey.
Looking ahead, my long-term vision extends beyond just a career in technology. I aspire to open my own game development studio in New York City, where I can combine storytelling, programming, and creativity to build immersive digital experiences. In addition, I plan to expand into multiple businesses and real estate, creating financial independence and opportunities that allow me to invest back into my community and support future generations.
