About Aksinya
I am a senior journalist student, minoring in business. Since August 2016, I've been working as a writing consultant at the KU Writing Center. I've been consulting students face-to-face on their writing whether it's an assignment, scholarship application, CV, or a personal project. I've done e-tutoring as well. Any graduate or undergraduate student could upload his/her file, and I would take time (45 minutes) to leave comments and provide an overall feedback. Since September 2017, I've been working as a workshop facilitator. I give lectures to KU classes on writing topics. I've also worked as a writing fellow (teaching assistant) for three humanities courses. I study journalism and enjoy writing in AP style. So, I can help students make sure that their news stories are written accurately. I am also fluent in Russian. I worked as the Russian language partner for military personnel, assisting the U.S. soldiers with their assignments for the Russian classes and preparing them for the Oral Proficiency Interview exam. In addition, I hold a position as a translator. I translate news documents and video materials on a news value from English to Russian.
Outside of school, I enjoy filming. When I get enough footage, I can use it and make it as a story. I am also an instructor on Udemy website teaching the Introduction to Academic Writing course. In addition, I volunteer at Prairie Park Elementary School, teaching a reading class to the first-grade students.
I've been working at the KU Writing Center for two years. I enjoy working one-on-one with students and helping them enhance their writing skills. During a consultation, students bring their work whether it's an outline, rough draft, or final draft; then, we decide what major concerns students have in their writing. After, we begin reading their essays and addressing major and/or minor problems within their writing. My goal as a writing consultant is to coach and assist students to become better writers.

As I tutor students during our face-to-face consultations, I always let them talk first and express their concerns regarding their writing. I don't let students whether he/she is a domestic or international student feel that they are bad writers. After they express their concerns and what they'd like to work on, we begin reading their essay or any writing project they brought. I try to make sure that I address the major concerns, which is the organization, flow, structure and so on. We work paragraph by paragraph. I always make sure the student understands everything. If we have time, I also make marks as I am reading the essay, and then I go back to them to address minor concerns, such as grammar and punctuation. I always make sure the students stay engaged with me and the writing process. My goal is to assist and coach them to become better writers.
