About Adm

Am Adam from Nigeria I love teaching and working with graduate students and geology majors. It’s a blast to work with students who care so much about the material already and who have a thirst to learn more. But what I really love teaching-and the teaching that I find to be the most impactful- is teaching those intro classes.

The introduction to the Geological Society of London’s recent Futuregeo Summit 2.0 states that geoscientists “need to undertake the single biggest collective marketing exercise that geoscience has even seen because [...] we face an extinction-level event.”

While this suggests that the situation is particularly grave in the UK, the geosciences being in a state of crisis is a recurring theme internationally. We seem to agree on this crisis’ causes and symptoms. People associate geology with dirty industries, we fail to convince that we can contribute to a sustainable future, don’t seem to get our messages across well, student numbers are going down, there are layoffs in industry, budget cuts in the academia, all of which is happening despite our importance that people fail to see.

This rather depressing image presents—fortunately, I’d say—a rather sharp contrast with my own experiences in the applied geosciences in my home country – The Netherlands. So, without wanting to downplay genuine concerns expressed by colleagues who are experiencing genuine problems, I’d like to share my own, more positive view on where we stand, or could stand (… depending on where you stand:).

Ours is a great science!

Geology has a great potential to inspire people who don’t know what geology is. I experienced this many times, for example when we celebrated our geological survey’s centennial anniversary and unveiled a geological map, and when we reported about a deeply buried volcano in the North Sea two months ago, making prime-time TV appearances and news headlines in both cases. But also in numerous presentations to lay audiences.

I think geology inspires because people love marveling, and geology never fails to deliver grandeur. Geologists add depth to the world as we perceive it. They make the unseen visible and project past worlds in the present one, allowing people to wonder or speculate about what the far future holds for us. A paleographic atlas we published, which is about to have its 10th Dutch edition and first international one, reveals how geology fascinates. I invariably see people leaf through the maps, find the location of their home, and enjoy realizing that a place they know intimately was once a barren tundra, engulfed by the sea, overgrown by peat, then buried by river clay, to be finally artificialized beyond recognition
