About Emma

I am a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Neuroscience and History and Philosophy of Science and a minor in Chemistry. Throughout my undergraduate career, I was the Lead Student Researcher in a laboratory studying traumatic and anoxic brain injury. In this position, I led my own research project characterizing cardiac arrest-induced brain injury and trained other undergraduates on the techniques I utilized in my project. Following graduation, I began working in another research lab studying glioma biology. A few months into my career here, I had the opportunity to train new lab members, visiting researchers, and researchers at other universities on state-of-the-art laboratory techniques. In this position, I've gained extensive knowledge in tissue, cell, and molecular biology, which will contribute to my success as a Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology tutor.

General lesson plan:
(1) Begin by asking the tutee(s) what they would like to accomplish in the session
(2) Come up with a list of objectives based on what we can accomplish in the allotted time
(3) Execute our objectives while periodically checking in with the student on their understanding of the material
(4) Review each objective we addressed in the session and assess the tutee's progress. A future appointment can be arranged to address any further concerns.
Teaching method: My approach to tutoring is centered on the tutee's goals. I begin by asking them what they want to accomplish and set objectives with them. I will give an overview of each objective and work through a few practice examples, writing them out as they watch, and I will then have them work through some examples on their own, answering any questions as they arise. Throughout the session, I want to give the tutee multiple opportunities to relay their concerns to me by actively offering them the space to do so. When students are struggling, they may not have the courage to speak up on their own when they don't understand, but providing that space by explicitly asking them how they are feeling may make it feel easier to voice their concerns. Along these same lines, I also like to ask the tutee to periodically explain what I've discussed with them back to me. This reinforces the concept by having the tutee put those concepts into their own words and verbalize them.
What sets me apart: I have a strong background in biological laboratory techniques, which gives me a unique and nuanced understanding of biological processes and anatomy/physiology. Biology is best understood when detailed research examples are provided to back up the claims, and my background provides me with the knowledge necessary to explain complex biological research techniques in a streamlined way.
Who are my lessons for: high school and college students
