About Bill

I'm a highly interactive teacher, and working with False Cognates, Contranyms, Homographs and other strange aspects of English is a fun way to explore the language. For example, there are well over 300 sets of False Cognates in English, and we'll discuss what they are and how they're used in everyday sentences.

I've been a teacher for over 30 years, most of them working online with students around the world. My students have included Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Portuguese, Twi, Korean, French and Spanish-speakers.

Their concerns have included Standard American English pronunciation, accent-reduction/modification, comprehension of spoken American English, specialized vocabulary and syntax, controlling speed of speech, using tone of voice with intentionality, and improving their verbal conversational and presentation skills.

Almost all of my students are at some stage of their career in business, the technical world, or the professions. I have also worked with graduate students who have been in the US for several years already. Many of my students already read and understand written English very well. Many of my students are also quite capable of reading written English materials aloud.

The challenges my students face lie mainly in the area of spontaneous spoken English, such as when they are making a technical presentation, explaining complex concepts to English-speakers, discussing matters with English-speaking clients, negotiating a business deal in English, or communicating well during an interview with a native-English speaker.

Many also feel challenged when expressing themselves in written English, whether in a research paper or business report, or in a presentation or proposal, or simply in an important memo or email.

I work with each student or group of students to identify and use learning materials that are relevant to their specific professional and business interests.

English

Can you easily tell the difference between "perspective" and "prospective"? English is full of these "False Cognates" and together we'll make sure that they'll never confuse you again.

In English there are hundreds of these pairs and triplets of "False Cognates" that cause trouble for even skilled native speakers and writers, and I've created a 10-session series around mastering the most important of them.

False cognates are words that sound alike, or that are written so similarly, and sometimes even identically, that confusion can easily arise whenever they are used.

Even if you are already a good communicator in English, in these sessions you're sure to uncover some surprising instances of where you've been mis-using words in the past.

We'll be looking at word combinations like these:

bore
boar
boor
A bore is a tiresome person or thing: "He is such a bore when he talks about his cats!"
A boar is a male pig: "Wild boars are everywhere in this forest."
A boor is an unrefined, vulgar person: "What a boor he was to get drunk at the wedding."

complement
compliment
Complement means "to supplement" or "make complete": "Their two personalities complement each other."
Compliment means "to praise or congratulate": "She received a compliment on her sense of fashion."

emigrant
immigrant
An emigrant is a person who leaves his native country to settle in another: "The emigrants left everything behind in search of something more."
An immigrant refers to a person who moves to a new country: "Many immigrants settle in this country every year."
