About Mathew
I am an experienced secondary school teacher with a strong track record of helping students build confidence and achieve excellent results in maths. I have worked in leading schools including Cathedral School Llandaff, Millfield, Sedbergh School, and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, gaining valuable experience across a range of high-performing educational environments.
Alongside my teaching, I have a strong passion for sport and personal development. I have completed multiple Ironman events and ultramarathons, demonstrating discipline, resilience, and commitment, qualities I bring into my teaching.
I also have a keen interest in football, rugby, and cricket, which helps me build strong relationships with students and create engaging, relatable learning experiences.
My approach is professional, structured, and tailored to each individual. I create a calm and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their understanding at their own pace. Lessons are carefully planned, with clear explanations, regular assessment, and a strong focus on exam technique to ensure measurable progress.

My approach to tutoring is centred around building confidence, understanding, and independence in learners. I use a structured but flexible teaching style, adapting each session to suit the individual needs of the student. Lessons typically begin with a short recap of prior learning, followed by clear explanations of new concepts using step-by-step modelling, before moving into guided practice and independent questions. I place a strong emphasis on exam technique, problem-solving, and helping students understand the “why” behind methods rather than just memorising procedures.
I incorporate a range of techniques including scaffolding, questioning, and regular low-stakes assessment to check understanding and address misconceptions quickly. Lessons are engaging, supportive, and designed to create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although shorter or longer sessions can be arranged depending on the student’s needs.
I am experienced teaching secondary school students, alongside my role as a tutor. I have a strong track record of supporting students to improve both their confidence and academic performance, particularly at GCSE level.
My lessons are primarily aimed at secondary school students (ages 11–16), including those preparing for GCSE exams, as well as learners who need additional support to strengthen their understanding of core maths concepts.
