About Philip

I’m a patient and structured math tutor with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Electrical Engineering and 4+ years of private tutoring experience, helping students truly understand math instead of just memorizing steps. I tutor General Math, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and ACT/SAT Math. I focus on clear, step-by-step explanations that adapt to each student’s learning style, helping them build confidence, problem-solving skills, and real understanding. I work with middle school, high school, and college students, as well as adult learners returning to math, and I enjoy making challenging concepts approachable and manageable.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

For a long time, I was average, sometimes bad at math. But as I grew older and entered high school, I started to improve. Slowly, I began to love solving equations and problems in math. This carried on to college where I did more advanced math subjects plus electrical engineering subjects. Figuring out the problem and getting it right was entertaining.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Throughout my academic experience, I have gained several knowledgeable skills that I use to assist students. I teach different math subjects. For example, algebra, elementary math, calculus, differential equations, trigonometry, geometry, and linear algebra. I also help students with electrical circuit analysis and other related subjects within the electrical engineering field. I am not a fan of statistics, but I do what I can to succeed.
  • Did you have any role models; or a teacher who inspired you?

I did not have a role model to say. However, I did have friends who inspired me to improve in my classes. Sometimes through healthy competition. It made me improve so I could help others.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be patient with his students because people learn at their own pace. A good tutor is adaptable because people are different and learn differently. A good tutor is kind because everyone likes a kind person. A good tutor explains info properly so that the student will forever understand. A good tutor listens to his students to decipher how to help. A good tutor sticks with the students through it all, from the beginning to the end.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In my younger school days, I was learning partial fractions. Listening to the teacher did not help me understand it. Reading textbooks also did not help me understand. At one point, I thought I got it, but I was at a loss when the question appeared different. Fast-forward to college, I was presented with the same problem. For some reason, it was easier to understand, especially when I practiced examples with different scenarios. What I am trying to say is to not worry about not understanding something now, you will eventually come to understand it later if you put in the effort.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Sometimes, a difficult problem presents itself and might take time to solve. You might want to give up or not try. Another area for my improvement is conveying knowledge to tricker students, since everyone is different. No one knows everything but we can learn how to solve a difficult question or how to help a person.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Solving problems in math and engineering is what I like to do when it comes to my subject. I also love showing people how to solve these problems. It brings a sense of accomplishment.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I am a Superprof because I have a great passion for helping people. Unlike most teachers I know who only relay the material without properly explaining it, I intend to stick with the students, explaining all they need to know and helping them with their classes, assignments, and assessments. That feels like the right thing to do.
