About Damon
I’m Damon, a patient and results-focused tutor specializing in Mathematics (Algebra, Calculus, Functions, Trigonometry) and English as a Second Language for high school and university students. With a professional background leading training and mentorship programs. I know how to break down complex ideas into simple, clear explanations. My approach is built on three pillars: understanding, confidence, and real-world application. Whether you’re struggling to keep up in math class or want to strengthen your English for school, work, or everyday life, I’ll meet you where you are and help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

I believe every student can succeed with the right support, and my lessons are tailored to your pace, learning style, and goals. For math, I use step-by-step guidance, relatable examples, and problem-solving strategies that make concepts stick. For ESL, I focus on practical communication skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while also covering grammar and vocabulary in context. My sessions are interactive, encouraging, and grounded in real-life situations so you can immediately apply what you learn. My goal isn’t just to help you pass a test—it’s to give you the skills and confidence to succeed far beyond the classroom.
As an example on Functions:
Lesson structure
1) Warm up & activation — 10 minutes
Quick diagnostic: 4 rapid items (2 ordered pairs, 1 table, 1 graph). Student writes answers (function? domain? range?). This shows gaps and builds early success by including at least one very easy question.
2) Mini-lesson: Concept & Notation — 15 minutes
Explain: “A function is a rule that gives exactly one output for each input.” Use the machine metaphor (input → rule → output)
Demonstrate with three short examples: ordered pair set, table (in/out), and a simple equation.
I'll use a simple, real-world example: “f(hours studied) = predicted quiz score,” showing mapping of a few inputs to outputs. This helps the student connect math to life.
Then we will do a Formative Check: I will ask the student to explain the definition in their own words; rephrase as needed.
3) Guided practice (scaffolded) — 20 minutes
- Work 4 problems together (progressing difficulty):
- Identify function from ordered pairs.
- Fill missing outputs in a function table (one-operation rules).
4) Independent practice (the student practices with coaching) — 15 minutes
Student does 4–6 short problems on their own while you observe (or work in pairs if remote).
Formative check: Tally correct answers and note recurring errors to target in the next lesson.
5) Real-world application & extension — 10 minutes
6) Exit questions & homework — 5–10 minutes
Exit ticket (3 quick Qs):
Identify a function. (small set of ordered pairs)
Give domain/range of a small discrete graph/table.
Homework (5 problems + 1 short written prompt): one page of practice problems (mixed types) + a brief written explanation: “In your own words, what is a function and why does the vertical-line test work?” — encourages metacognition and writing skill
