About Vince
One of the very first things you should know is that I don't think there is such thing as a person who's truly bad at math. I have never met a student who was too far behind or too confused to help.
My teaching experience has been entirely located in inner-city schools. The unfortunate reality is that while I have a few students who come to me well-prepared, the vast majority of my students are arriving at least 2 grade levels behind where they are supposed to be. That just means that at some point, those students had one bad year (or bad teacher) and have struggled to get caught up ever since. It happened to me, too, so don't ever let that keep you from trying to get better.

The thing that makes math such a difficult subject for most people is that it's cumulative. That means if you ever fall behind, it can be a real struggle to get caught up and to feel caught up.
The other part of math that is incredibly difficult for almost all people is that there are so many different strategies to use, it can be hard to look at a problem and know exactly how to go about tackling it.
I focus on building foundational skills so that you'll know how, why, and when to use various strategies to solve problems. To this end, my teaching style (and a typical lesson) has three main elements:
1) Build foundational skills through practice. No getting around it; as you get into higher levels of math, problems become more complicated. You will need to have a solid enough understanding of the basics so that you're never wondering if you did that division correctly or not.
2) Relating new ideas to existing concepts, or to real-world examples. One of my greatest skills as a teacher is being able to connect concepts to each other, and connect them to something that you personally care about. Math would be a real pain to learn if you were never going to use it for anything, right?
3) Teaching my students to recognize when to use strategies. There's absolutely no point in learning how to do things i you don't also know when to do them. The third major element that I focus on is teaching my students how to recognize when a specific strategy is supposed to be used. This could be through key words or phrases, specific conceptual truths that books never mention, or any number of other things.
