About Richard

I graduated from Duke University in 2021 with a double major in Statistics and Computer Science. I was a teaching assistant for introductory statistics courses for two years. I am currently working full-time in financial services in a data science role.

I have scored in the 99th+ percentile in every standardized math test I have ever taken. I recieved 5s in both AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics.
I am offering my tutoring services because I am passionate about math education.

I don't believe in "I'm just not a math person." What complete nonsense. Would you ever hear someone proudly say "Oh, I'm just illerate!"? No, of course not, because that is ridiculous and embarassing. EVERYONE can do math up to calculus with sufficient practice, attention to detail, and effort.

I am a big believer that YOU need to be motivated to learn, my role is to merely serve as a guide. I will not force you to do anything, and I will trust your judgement on the areas you would like help on. If you cannot be honest with yourself nor take responsibility for your studies, then we are incompatible.

My teaching methodology for maths is to build a strong foundation and understanding of core concepts to then apply towards solving practice problems, over and over until complete mastery is achieved. I believe learning happens best the second time around (ie, during review) and through repetition.

My tutoring sessions are not "fun". Fun means the lesson was too easy, which means room for more productivity and improvement in other areas. Musicians wouldn't say practicing scales are fun, athletes don't say doing drills are fun, so why on earth should tutoring be fun? Practice is meant to be productive, hopefully engaging, maybe interesting, but not fun.

I will provide customized, handwritten notes of our lessons, so that you can easily review the content on your own time.

I was a teaching assistant at Duke for 2 years and have privately tutored for over 7 years, so I am familiar with most problems that students are facing, and can quickly adapt to meet the unique needs of each student.

For a tutor with my credentials, hourly rates of $80+/hr is not uncommon. I am willing to offer my services at a slightly discounted rate for accessibility and greater reach because I care about math education. Unfortunately, I cannot go any lower since I am very busy and still need an incentive to prepare and put in my best effort for these sessions.
