About Samuel
I am an aspiring academic; the very fabric of my being is woven together to form a mosaic depicting my greatest loves: art, mathematics, music, philosophy, cognitive neuroscience, literature, theoretical physics, and poetry. I cannot help but share this love of mine in an attempt to inspire that same joy I experience when in the ecstasy of discovery. As a child, I remember reading writings from a Dutch mathematical historian, lamenting on the state of current pedagogical affairs; he encouraged understanding math by discovering it for yourself: you become the expert by undergoing your own eureka moment. Later, following his advice and problem sets, I was able to discover integration over an interval by literally re-inventing ancient techniques. It was a high like no other, and one I wish to share with students and tutees. During a brief stint at Oberlin (taking place during my gap year after high school), I formulated a lecture series for children in mathematics taking inspiration from the Dutch mathematical historian, the Art of Problem Solving, Paul Lockhart's laments, and various textbooks. I began with pre-algebra and am still undergoing this series---despite it being on a temporary break. As much as I love to say this is all about the student, I must admit, this is simply untrue. It is too about me: I have a vested self-interest, beyond monetary gains, bore from the understanding and experiences I gain with each person I tutor. You are all so fascinating, you all learn differently, and you all have so much potential. I seriously mean this. Every person I tutor teaches me so much that will be invaluable to my prospective future career as a professor. Lessons with me are not simply a teacher-student/tutor-tutee dynamic, it is a discussion; we speak on footings (discussion style) founded in guided discovery. Let me be your Virgil---guiding you through the seemingly daunting and hellish landscape of the inferno of mathematics into the brilliance of joys of mathematical paradisio.

- I am flexible when it comes to preferred teaching styles of students, however, I have found that inquiry-based learning and problem-solving learning often produces the best results for students. - We would first discuss your personal situation and personal mathematical background/repertoire. If you have specific issues and know what they are we can work on them. However, if you have no clue what is happening, feel totally lost, even a bit lost, but don't know where to start we can implement the following plan: attempt problems -> I go over attempts -> find gaps -> give more problems to guide you to understanding the problems and solutions intuitively -> give lecture/explanation on why exactly this (or said solution, formulation, etc.) works, adding bits of insight that may have been missed. Repeat. - I am able to relate to the struggle: I am also a student! Every day I come across some new higher-order mathematical concept that bewilders me and I have to break it down into bite-sized chunks. Not only that, but I greatly struggled in math when I was younger and had to spend time studying techniques for problem-solving, elementary mathematics, and more, to make up for my lackluster math education as a child. - I am able to tutor mathematics from elementary school levels (arithmetic, basic number theory, pre-algebra, etc.), to high school (algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, precalculus, and calculus) and beyond (logic, set theory, discrete mathematics, group theory).
