About Alex

I’m a Mathematics with Economics student at UCL, and I got good at Maths when I realised that it is much more about practice, consistency and perseverance than natural ability. Through a lot of practice and trial and error, I developed a strong understanding of Maths at school level, including exam technique, how to break down difficult questions and what examiners are actually looking for.

I enjoy sharing what I’ve learnt with students, particularly as I’m still a recent student myself and can relate to the challenges they face. I’ve picked up plenty of different ways of approaching questions and explaining topics along the way, and I enjoy finding what works best for each student. I also think confidence is a big part of improving at Maths: once a student starts seeing that they can do something they previously struggled with, it becomes much easier to keep progressing.

I genuinely believe that most students can improve significantly in Maths with consistent work and the right guidance, regardless of where they start. This is something I’ve tried to encourage more broadly through my role as Head Boy, where I was involved in several initiatives aimed at supporting students and their academic success. I find it rewarding to see the progress a student can make with the right support, and I want to share the knowledge and approaches that helped me succeed. Maths can be frustrating at times, but it is also a subject that can open a lot of doors academically and professionally, which is something I think makes helping students build a strong foundation in it particularly worthwhile.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is structured and organised, while always adapting lessons to the individual student. Having achieved 95%+ in A Level Maths and Further Maths, 4 A*s at A Level and grades 7–9 across my GCSEs, I have developed a strong understanding of both the content and the exam techniques needed to perform well.
When introducing a new topic, I often use an “I do, we do, you do” approach. I first explain the concept and work through an example, then we tackle questions together before the student attempts them independently. This helps me identify gaps in understanding and make sure the student is genuinely confident before moving on.
I believe that understanding, regular practice and spaced repetition are key to retaining mathematical knowledge. I therefore revisit topics throughout lessons and use a mixture of practice and exam-style questions, helping students build confidence and apply what they have learnt rather than simply memorising methods.
Lessons are typically 1 hour, although I can adapt this depending on the student's age, level and needs. I have 3 years of tutoring experience across KS2, KS3, GCSE and A Level, working with students of different abilities. I aim to create a friendly environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, while still making clear progress towards their academic and exam goals.
