About Michael
Learning is a complicated thing. While sitting in a class and taking notes is not so hard, learning as a whole comes with a host of issues; shame, comparison with classmates, math anxiety, not wanting to feel like a 'nerd', and more. These are things that I believe have absolutely no place in the learning process, and it is my goal to remove them so that my students feel free to absorb information. As an aspiring Mechanical Engineer, I try to make the learning process as methodical and logical as I can, and I help create a calm and nurturing learning environment by answering questions, encouraging curiosity, and supporting students in every step of the way to learning. I also approach every student with the understanding that not everyone learns in the same way, and I try to cater to the needs of various learning styles.

I teach high school and college level physics, arithmetic, geometry, precalculus (including trigonometry, algebra, and more), calculus (I, II, III, AP Calc AB, BC), and linear algebra.
As a tutor, my goal is to get students to a place where I can take off the training wheels. I believe that it is imperative for students to not just learn concepts, but practice them diligently and understand them independently. To help students succeed in this, I use a four-part lesson structure:
- 1, Overview: I introduce the topics of the lesson and gauge if and how the lesson plan needs to be adjusted for the student's particular needs.
- 2, Lecture: I reinforce the concepts the student has learned in class by reviewing them.
- 3, Assisted work: For between 20-45 minutes, I walk through some examples with the student.
- 4, Unassisted work: I assign a rigorous but manageable practice set which let students independently build their skills while giving me an idea of what areas we need to review in the following session.
I do not grade students' work. In fact, I try do not do anything that introduces extra anxiety for the students. I find that it is when there is excess pressure that students find ways to cut corners and not genuinely learn the concepts as they should. Instead, I offer constructive feedback and use mistakes in students' work as signs that certain topics need to be looked at again. What I want more than anything is to know that the students I help have the confidence to grasp concepts and retain them so that they may continue to succeed and build their academic skills.
