About Pragya

I'm a Master of Data Science graduate from Monash University, and I've spent the a year post graduation, teaching database subjects to both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the university.

That teaching experience shapes how I tutor. Sitting in consultation hours with dozens of students, you learn quickly that most people don't struggle with SQL syntax, they struggle with the model underneath it. They can write a SELECT statement but can't picture what a join is actually doing to the rows, so the moment a question changes shape, they're stuck. I teach the mental model first and the syntax second, which is why students tend to stop needing me sooner than they expect.

I now tutor SQL online, working with university students, career changers moving into data roles, and professionals who need to query their own company's database without waiting on an analyst.

Who I work with
University students (undergraduate and postgraduate) taking database or data management units, career changers preparing for data analyst roles, and working professionals who need SQL for their day-to-day job.

What we cover
• SQL fundamentals — SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY, aggregate functions, GROUP BY and HAVING
• Joins — inner, outer, self-joins, and why the wrong join silently gives you the wrong number
• Subqueries, CTEs and window functions
• Database design — ER modelling, keys, relationships, normalisation to 3NF/BCNF
• Stored procedures, triggers, views and indexing
• Query performance and reading an execution plan
• MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and SQLite
• Interview preparation — the SQL questions that actually come up in data analyst and data engineer screens

How a lesson runs
We start with what you're stuck on, not with a fixed syllabus. I'll usually ask you to attempt a query out loud before I show you anything — it's the fastest way for both of us to find the exact point where your understanding breaks. Then we work on live queries against a real database rather than reading slides. You keep the queries and notes afterwards.

On assignments
I'm glad to help with coursework, and I'll work through it with you — explaining the concepts, checking your logic, and helping you debug. I don't complete assignments on a student's behalf. If that's what you need, I'm not the right tutor. If you want to understand the material well enough to defend your own answer, I'm exactly the right tutor.

First lesson
The first session is free. We'll talk through what you're studying, where you're getting stuck and what timeline you're working to, and I'll tell you honestly how many sessions I think it'll take.
