About Mathias
I'm Mathias — MSc in Astrophysics and software engineer with 5+ years of professional
development and consulting experience. I tutor Physics, Mathematics, and Programming,
from middle-school level all the way through university-level coursework.
My background: I studied physics in English at university, working through the same
calculus-based mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics that
my students are now working through. I know which derivations everyone struggles with
and where the textbooks gloss over the actual conceptual difficulty.
Alongside academic teaching, I work as a software engineer — Python, JavaScript, full-stack
development, AI automation. This matters for two kinds of students: those preparing for
informatics exams who want help with real code, and physics students who want to see how
the math actually applies in scientific computing.
I currently teach in a structured school environment, so I'm comfortable adapting to
different learning styles, exam formats, and curricula — Austrian Matura, German Abitur,
A-Levels, IB, or university-specific coursework. Students preparing for SAT/ACT math
also welcome.
What you can expect from a session with me:
- Clear, structured explanations — no jargon for jargon's sake
- Worked examples from your actual textbook or homework, not generic problems
- An honest read on what you understand and what you don't (no fake reassurance)
- Specific homework or practice between sessions, scaled to your goals
I keep my tutoring roster small so I can actually prepare for each session. If we're
a good fit, we'll find that out in the first lesson — which is free.
Languages: native German, professional English (C2, TOEFL certified). My MSc was taught
entirely in English, so I'm fluent in scientific and technical vocabulary in both.

Most students who come to me are stuck on something specific — a chapter that didn't
click in class, a problem set they can't crack, an exam two weeks out and they're not
where they need to be. The first session always starts the same way: you show me the
material, I figure out which underlying piece is actually missing, and we work from
there.
A typical session is 60 or 90 minutes, online via Zoom or Google Meet. I share my
screen, write equations live on a digital whiteboard, and ask you to work problems
while I watch — that's where I see what you actually know vs. what looks fine on
paper. Recordings of the session available on request.
Between sessions: I assign 2–4 specific problems or one short reading, scaled to how
fast we're moving. Nothing performative — only what actually pushes you toward the
goal.
For programming students: we work in your real codebase or project (or build one
together if you're starting from scratch). I don't teach abstract Python — I teach
Python by writing actual programs that do real things.
Group lessons available on request for 2–3 students preparing for the same exam.
