Find out more about Marcus

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in mathematics developed during high school naturally as I enjoyed not just solving problems but also understanding the reason behind them. Tutoring began for me during university, parallel to my study to become a high school maths teacher. Since then, I have been committed to improving students' relationship with mathematics and their results.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I currently Mathematics year 7 - 12 at a Sydney Catholic School and have over 4 years of tutoring experience before full-time teaching. I enjoy topics that build logical thinking, such as algebra, functions, and probability, where students can see clear patterns and structure. While some students find topics like geometry or complex algebra challenging, I enjoy breaking themdown into simple, manageable steps.
  • Did you have any role models, a teacher who inspired you?

My teaching style is shaped by the many educators I have worked alongside and learnt from. I am particularly inspired by Eddie Woo, whose ability to make mathematics engaging and accessible showed me the importance of clarity and enthusiasm. His approach reinforced my belief that maths should feel empowering, not intimidating.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor demonstrates strong subject expertise while remaining attentive to each student's learning style, interests, and confidence level. Building trust is essential so that students feel comfortable asking questions and embracing challenges. Consistent, purposeful feedback ensures progress is both measurable and meaningful.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Teaching is both dynamic and demanding, requiring thoughtful preparation and adaptability throughout the day. While it is deeply rewarding, it has also strengthened my resilience and ability to respond strategically to unexpected challenges. These qualities directly enhance the structured and supportive environment I provide to my students.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

A recurring challenge in Mathematics education is addressing students’ preconceived anxieties toward the subject. I continually reflect on and refine my teaching strategies to ensure lessons are engaging, differentiated, and accessible to all learners. My focus remains on reshaping mindset alongside strengthening skill development.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in cultivating purposeful and confident learners through Mathematics. I value the subject not only for its technical rigour but for its ability to develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Supporting students in reaching their full potential is central to my professional mission.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I combine comprehensive classroom experience with personalised tutoring methodologies to ensure high-impact learning. Through structured progress tracking and data-informed feedback, I provide targeted support that drives measurable improvement. My approach is both strategic and student-centred, ensuring lasting academic growth.
