About Nicholas
I am an NYU Shanghai graduate and current graduate student at NYU Stern, where I am studying Quantitative Finance. I earned my degree in Computer Systems Engineering after studying for three and a half years in Shanghai and half a year in New York.
During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a Research Assistant at the NYU Quantum Technology Lab, where I gained experience applying engineering, programming, and mathematical thinking to advanced technical problems. I also worked as a Learning Assistant for introductory programming courses, completing over 50 hours of active tutoring. In this role, I helped students strengthen their coding fundamentals, improve their debugging skills, and build confidence in Python programming.
I also co-instructed weekly recitation sections, organized and led exam review sessions, and held six office hours per week to support students with individual learning needs. This experience taught me how to explain difficult concepts clearly, identify where students are struggling, and adjust my explanations to match each student’s learning style.
In addition to programming and technical tutoring, I have experience teaching English to young Chinese children through reading practice, worksheets, and interactive activities. This helped me develop a patient, flexible, and encouraging teaching style, especially for younger students.
I take my students’ progress seriously and aim to create a supportive learning environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and improving step by step. My goal is not only to help students complete their assignments or prepare for exams, but also to help them understand the material deeply and become more confident learners.

My teaching style is structured, practical, and adapted to each student’s level. For programming, I generally follow the structure of MIT’s introductory Python curriculum while adjusting the difficulty based on the student’s age, background, and goals. I teach Python through core concepts such as variables, functions, loops, data structures, and basic algorithms, while also helping students build practical problem-solving skills. I can also teach beginner web development, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
A typical programming lesson starts with a short review of the previous topic, followed by a clear explanation of a new concept, guided examples, and then practice problems where the student writes code independently with my support. I focus on making sure students truly understand the logic behind the code rather than just memorizing syntax.
For math and science, I follow standard college and college-prep textbooks depending on the student’s level. For example, in physics, I can base the curriculum on University Physics with Modern Physics, while simplifying or expanding the material depending on the student’s needs. Lessons usually include concept explanation, worked examples, practice problems, and review of mistakes.
What sets me apart as a tutor is that I teach at the student’s pace while still maximizing progress. I pay close attention to feedback, confusion, and mistakes, then re-explain concepts in different ways until they become clear. My goal is to help students build confidence, not just finish assignments.
My lessons are best suited for middle school, high school, and early college students who need help with programming, math, physics, science, or beginner web development. I can support students preparing for exams, improving grades, learning Python from scratch, or building stronger problem-solving skills.
