About Kirah
Hi! I’m Syakirah, an NUS Life Sciences undergraduate with a strong interest in science, education and the visual arts.
I wasn’t always naturally good at academics. Having experienced both struggling at the bottom of my cohort and eventually working my way into the upper percentile of my JC cohort, I understand that doing poorly in a subject does not mean a student is incapable. Sometimes, they simply have not found a way of learning that works for them yet.
I have several years of experience tutoring secondary school students in Biology, Chemistry and Math. One of my most memorable students went from being near the bottom of her class in the Normal (Academic) stream to placing in the top 3, and later pursued Biomedical Science in polytechnic. Experiences like this are a big part of why I continue teaching.
Beyond academics, I also teach Visual Art, particularly traditional mediums. Art has been a big part of my life for many years, and I enjoy helping students develop their technical skills, explore different mediums and become more confident in their own creative style.
At NUS, my studies in Life Sciences have given me a deeper understanding of Biology and Chemistry beyond the secondary school syllabus. I’ve also had experience in scientific research, which has strengthened the way I approach problems, explain concepts and connect what students learn in school to how science actually works.
As a tutor, I’m patient and approachable, but I also take my students’ progress seriously. I’m especially keen to work with students who genuinely want to improve, regardless of where they are starting from. You do not need to be a top student or even particularly confident in the subject. What matters to me is that you are willing to try.
I strongly believe that it takes two hands to clap. I can put in the time to understand your weaknesses, adapt my teaching and support you, but I also hope my students will meet me halfway by asking questions, practicing and being open to learning from their mistakes.
Students are also welcome to send me questions outside of lesson hours if they get stuck while studying or doing their work. I’m happy to help where I can, although replies will usually come after my own school or working hours.
More than anything, I hope to be the kind of tutor I would have appreciated when I was struggling myself. Someone who takes the time to understand where you are stuck, believes you are capable of improving, and helps you build the confidence to eventually figure things out on your own.

I know what it feels like to struggle academically. I’ve been at the bottom of my cohort before, and through figuring out how I learn best and teaching myself differently, I eventually worked my way into the top 15-20% of my JC cohort.
That experience really shapes how I tutor. In a full classroom, even a good teacher may not always have the time to figure out the exact blind spot stopping one student from understanding something. Sometimes, repeating the same explanation just doesn’t work. The student might need someone to sit down with them, figure out where they got lost, and explain it in a completely different way.
This is something I’m quite adamant about in my lessons. I want my students to actually understand what they are learning instead of just memorizing enough to get through an exam. I’ll break concepts down, ask questions to figure out where the gaps are, and explain things in different ways until something clicks. I also want my students to be comfortable telling me, “I still don’t get it”, without feeling embarrassed.
One of my best students started out near the bottom of her class in the Normal (Academic) stream. With consistent one-to-one support, she eventually became one of the top 3 students in her class. What made me even happier was seeing how much more confident she became in herself and her ability to learn. She eventually went on to pursue Biomedical Science in polytechnic.
I think confidence makes a huge difference. Sometimes a student has spent so long thinking they are “bad” at a subject that they stop believing they can improve. I want my students to eventually reach a point where they can look at a difficult question and think, “Okay, I can figure this out.”
I’m currently an NUS Life Sciences undergraduate, and I teach secondary school Biology, Chemistry and Math, including students preparing for their N/O-Levels. Lessons are usually 1 to 2 hours, depending on the student’s needs and attention span.
Whether you’re struggling with the basics, trying to catch up, or aiming for a higher grade, I’ll meet you where you are. My priority is to figure out what you don’t understand, build your foundations properly, and make sure you never feel bad for needing something explained again.
P.S I teach visual art too! PM me if you would like my portfolio and a previous student's portfolio.

I was Ms Kirah's art student in 2022 and it has been an amazing experience. She creates a welcoming and warm environment where i deeply felt comfortable to express my creativity.
She is very patient and knowledgeable, always ready to explain things clearly and help whenever I struggle. The lessons are fun and inspiring, and I can see myself improving each time I practice. It was the best decision i made engaging Ms Kirah to build my DSA portfolio. Whether you want to discover a hidden talent or want to develop your skills, I highly recommend learning from Ms Kirah.Kirah is my neighbour and was my chemistry tutor in 2021. Her lessons were well structured but never rigid. She would quickly notice when I was stuck and would help me work out the problem without spoon feeding me the answer. She is very patient and encouraging. With her guidance, I went from failing chemistry to getting good marks for my exam
