About Jonty

I have an Integrated Masters degree in Earth sciences (St. Edmund Hall, matriculated 2016), and I am currently working on publication for my masters project, a geochemical study on mineralisation and ore formation in SW Scotland.

I have taught maths for GCSE, A-Level and IB Higher students since 2016. I have taught physics and geology to GCSE and A-level and Chemistry at GCSE level.

In my university exams in maths, physics, chemistry and biology I received firsts.

I also have experience teaching and working with younger children, having helped to run a youth group for several years

I have a strong belief in the socratic method, having been exposed to it extensively myself, in the Oxford tutorial system, and having used it in my own teaching since.

The core of the method is constantly requiring students to think critically about the problems they are working on, and to ruthlessly examine their own knowledge and presuppositions. This leads to a far deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and physical systems than teaching methods which are not based around dialogue, and equips students to face unfamiliar tasks. This method is especially pertinent to the teaching of maths and science, where simplifications are frequently made to allow students to understand fundamental ideas, but which then impede their progress when they are required to have a higher level of understanding.

Teaching is based around working through sets of example questions with the student, which follow a logical progression, guiding the student into deeper understanding as they consider increasingly complex problems. At some point the student will be unable to solve a problem, and we then work backwards to examine their understanding of the topic and find out what is holding them back. We can correct misconceptions or simple gaps in knowledge exposed by this method, and then apply the new understanding to the solve the problem which we had been working on, and then proceed again to deepen understanding with more complex examples.

I tend not to set lots of independent study, preferring instead a limited number of questions to reinforce the specific learning points identified.
