About Katie

Hi, I'm Katie! I'm an American in the UK teaching all things Linguistics.

I hold bachelor's and master's degrees in Linguistics with a research focus in Sociophonetics. I have experience working on the Oxford English Dictionary (I'm one of the voice actors whose pronunciations you can hear online) and other Oxford University Press resources. I've also worked in educational outreach (designing and delivering MFL sessions for pupils ranging from year 5 to year 12) for the University of Oxford and in ed tech at both Atom Learning and OxEd and Assessment (the team behind the NELI Programme, for any Early Years parents who might be familiar). I also teach on multiple Oxford summer school programmes and have experience supporting pupils navigating the university application process. I've been involved with Girl Scouts since I was a kid and have 15+ years of experience as a camp counsellor or leading my own troop. I'm passionate about language and education and love when these two passions overlap! I'm committed to my students, and although I will challenge them in order to master concepts, I strive to ensure lessons are as enjoyable as possible. In my free time, I like to bake, go to the cinema, and manage tech for my improvised comedy group.

About the lesson

I teach all things Linguistics to students from Early Years (phonics and literacy) onwards. I teach AS and A-level English Language, as well as university-level Linguistics (Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics) and English Literature. Additionally, I am happy to coach pupils through the university application process and am particular familiar with UK and US higher education systems.

My lessons last one hour and are conducted either in-person in central Oxford or over video call. I realise that each student's needs are unique, so I work with them (and their guardian, if appropriate) to build a lesson plan that leverages their strengths in order to tackle trickier concepts, deepen understanding, and build confidence.
