About Jacob
I teach AP Physics, astronomy, and multivariable calculus full-time at a high school in the DC area, and I hold a PhD in astrophysics with active research in gravitational lensing and dark matter. Before that, I spent a decade as a teaching assistant, course lead, and private tutor at UMD, Drexel, and the College of New Jersey — teaching everything from remedial algebra to nuclear physics.
Somewhere along the path to my PhD, I found that my favorite thing about science was teaching it. I'm still actively involved in research, but the classroom is where I do my best work — and the students I've never met are the ones who couldn't succeed if they were met with a teacher who took the time to understand them.

Most of my students are aiming at something specific: a 5 on AP Physics C or the calculus exams, a top SAT math score, or real command of a college physics or math course. Because I teach these courses and write the exams for them, I know how the AP rewards reasoning over memorized procedure, and I structure sessions accordingly — hands-on problem work, built around how the individual student thinks, with real practice between sessions.
The digital SAT in particular rewards clear reasoning far more than tricks. I teach the underlying math properly, then layer in the timing and strategy the test demands.
I'm patient, but I don't lower the bar. I don't simplify a subject to make it feel easier — I find the missing piece that makes the hard version make sense. Sessions online or in person. If you're not sure whether I'm the right fit, message me and we'll talk it through before booking anything.
