About Martin
I am a graduate research student with seminar teaching, small group and 1-1 tutoring experience. I initially studied English at Corpus Christi College Oxford, where I won an academic scholarship, and became convinced that academia and helping others in the wider community discovering the joys of language and literature were my primary focus. My studies and literary activities have seen me develop a wide understanding of British and comparative literature ranging from the 12th century onward, as well as a knowledge of critical theories and new currents within literary criticism. I completed an MA in English Literature at Keele University last year with Distinction and am now enrolled on a Phd in contemporary literature at the same institution. In addition to this I am available to offer tuition weekdays, evenings and weekends, with discounts for longer-term tutees.

My approach is primarily learner-led. An initial consultation will identify a learner's self-described objectives (e.g. to achieve a specific level of qualification, or to improve competency in some particular aspect of English language or English literary studies), we will carry out a short assessment and I will make preliminary recommendations about a program of learning. Although a provisional plan will be drawn up by myself, we (learners, their parents/guardians and I) can then refine this together after further discussion and further refine it upon review once tutorials start - needs will change and progress can be made more quickly than initially anticipated.
Tutorials will focus upon knowledge of grammar and syntax where appropriate, but also upon creative writing, introductory critical theory and applied literary criticism (from GCSE to University level) - dependent on a learner's needs. First and foremost, what sessions set out to do is create independence and allow the student to feel confident with navigating the demands of English within and beyond academic study. This confidence entails, in particular, an ability to apply critical skills to texts and develop their own informed point-of-view as well as to identify formal rhetorical and grammatical features.
I encourage readers to bring their own past readings, enthusiasms and reflections to analysis or writing exercises in order to foster a self-motivated and active engagement with English
