About Kobina
Hi there!
I'm Kobina, and I'm a Maths, Further Maths, and Statistics tutor.
Much of my tutoring experience has been in mathematical subjects, because I have I've been studying Mathematics and related subjects for over 11 years. This education culminated in my graduation with a PhD in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Liverpool in December 2022. While at Liverpool, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and it was my job to help students to work through their academic problems in tutorial sessions. After my Bachelor's degree, I was also a teaching assistant at my previous university, where I played a similar role. I have had quite a breadth of teaching experiences, including:
- teaching students on a one-on-one basis (in-person);
- lecturing small groups of students;
- addressing large lecture halls full of students;
- creating exercise sheets for hundreds of university students;
- marking homework and exams.
In all, I have about 4 years of tutoring experience.
I enjoy many different elements of the teaching process. In particular, I derive significant personal gratification from:
(1) slowly going over examples and exercises that students struggle with. I so enjoy this that I am willing to spend as much time as may be necessary until the student becomes comfortable with the solution to a problem. I have no sense of the urgency or impatience which prevents some teachers and tutors from spending sufficient time going over things with students.
(2) heavily leveraging my casual and approachable personal style to explain concepts using a wide variety of (at times humorous) examples and perspectives.
(3) casually asking students probing questions to get them to think about the reasons why they solve problems in certain ways. This opens students up to the possibility of approaching problems in other ways that they may not have been aware of, and it can help students to learn how to identify mistakes in their reasoning.
I enjoy teaching students at all levels of their education, and would be glad to offer my help to you.

I've developed a casual, relaxed, and patient teaching style that depends on the use a variety of different examples and ways of explaining concepts.
My lessons typically begin with a casual introduction to the fundamental ideas behind a topic. After this, I immediately start showing students what basic problems look like. Then, depending on how the student is feeling, I will either provide more examples at that the introductory level, or increase the complexity of the examples by a small margin. It is important to understand that there is no rush on my part to get to the more difficult material. Mathematics is built from the ground up, and the best teachers make sure that their students have strong fundamentals.
Once the student is ready for the more advanced levels of a given topic, I generally start using past exam problems as examples and exercises. This helps to build the students confidence by showing them how far they've come.
I usually end lessons by providing problems for students to try in their spare time.
