About Andy

Hello! I am a PhD student in Chemistry with a passion for helping students unlock the "logic" of science. My journey in academia has taken me from being a Teaching Assistant at the University of Havana to a Teaching Assistant at the University of Alberta. Having published multiple research articles, I don't just teach from a textbook—I teach from a deep, practical understanding of how science shapes our world.

Since May 2025, I have been helping students across Edmonton achieve their academic goals. Whether you are aiming for medical school, engineering, or simply want to master your high school diploma exams, I am here to ensure you succeed with confidence.

1. Teaching Methodology & Techniques
I don't believe in memorizing formulas. I teach students to understand the underlying physical and chemical principles. Understanding the basics is the key to move forward with more complicated principles.

Active Visualization: Science may be abstract. I use molecular modeling tools and real-world analogies (from my research experience) to make invisible processes feel "real."

Problem Solving: I guide students through the "I do, We do, You do" method. I demonstrate a complex problem, we solve a similar one together, and then the student masters it independently to build confidence.

2. A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)
00-10 mins: Concept Review: We review the previous week's material and I ask targeted questions to find any "gaps" in understanding before moving forward.

10-30 mins: Core Knowledge Deep Dive: I introduce the new topic using, focusing on the most difficult nuances that teachers often skip.

30-50 mins: Practice: We work through exam questions. Since I’ve been a TA, I know exactly what graders look for and where students lose "silly" marks.

50-60 mins: Summary: We summarize the key takeaways and I provide a 1-2 sentence "mental hook" for the student to remember the core concept until our next session.

3. What Sets me Apart
As a published researcher, I can show students how the "boring" classroom science is actually being used to solve world problems today. This increases student engagement.

Having graded hundreds of exams at the U of A, I know the common pitfalls and the "marking keys."

Having taught in both Havana and Edmonton, I have a diverse range of teaching styles that I can adapt to any student's personality.

4. Who the Lessons Are For
High School (Grades 10-12): Specifically Alberta Chemistry, Physics and Math 20/30. More advanced topics can also be covered if the student is willing to learn more towards their future.

University Students: General Chemistry, Inorganic or Physical Chemistry, Spectroscopic methods.
