About Brent
I'm Brent, a 5th year PhD candidate at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center specializing in neuroscience and pharmacology research, where I investigate how immune system activation affects brain blood vessel function and alcohol-related behaviors. Over the past decade, I've built a strong foundation in biomedical sciences through publishing six peer-reviewed papers (first author on five), presenting at over 30 national and international conferences, and successfully securing more than $73,000 in competitive research fellowships. My American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship scored in the top 13.1 percentile nationally, demonstrating my ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly and effectively—a skill I bring directly to my tutoring. I've mentored two Master's students through their thesis projects and received multiple academic honors, including the Excellence in Pharmacology and Neuroscience Scholarship and recognition from the Texas Tech Office of Research and Innovation. My research expertise spans molecular biology, genetics, behavioral neuroscience, and advanced data analysis, giving me comprehensive knowledge across the full spectrum of biological sciences. My teaching philosophy centers on building confidence through scaffolded learning—I meet students where they are, identify their learning style, and adapt my approach using analogies, diagrams, and interactive discussion to make challenging material accessible. A typical session includes a brief review of previous material, focused instruction on new concepts with worked examples, guided practice where students solve problems with decreasing support, and homework assignment review to address persistent struggles. What distinguishes me is my combination of rigorous academic training (PhD candidate in neuroscience), proven teaching success (mentored graduate students to thesis completion), and genuine passion for demystifying complex scientific concepts that intimidate many students. My tutoring serves undergraduate pre-med, pre-health, and biology majors struggling with courses like biochemistry, physiology, genetics, neuroscience, and statistics, as well as graduate students needing support with research skills, scientific writing, or comprehensive exam preparation. I also provide specialized coaching for students applying to graduate programs who need help with personal statements, research proposals, or interview preparation.
