About Mila
I am a Chemistry tutor with 8 years of experience and a DPhil in Physical Chemistry with a specialism in ultrafast spectroscopy. I have taught over 270 students from A-Level through to graduate level physical chemistry. My research background in spectroscopy means I bring a genuine expert perspective to the spectroscopic content of physical chemistry that most tutors cannot match, and my broad physical chemistry training means I am equally strong on thermodynamics, kinetics, and quantum chemistry. I believe physical chemistry is the most intellectually beautiful part of chemistry and I am passionate about helping students discover this. Let me help you develop a genuine understanding of physical chemistry from first principles.

My Chemistry teaching at the physical chemistry level specifically develops the mathematical and thermodynamic reasoning that distinguishes physical chemistry from other branches and that most students find the most challenging and the most intellectually rewarding. Thermodynamics is taught from the first and second laws as fundamental physical principles, with specific attention to the meaning and properties of entropy — the measure of the dispersal of energy and matter — because students who genuinely understand entropy can derive all thermodynamic results logically where those without this understanding must memorize each result separately. I teach the Gibbs free energy as the criterion for chemical spontaneity in a form that is physically meaningful — it is the maximum useful work obtainable from a process at constant temperature and pressure — because this physical interpretation makes all the applications of Gibbs free energy to electrochemistry and equilibrium logically coherent. Kinetics is developed from the molecular level, connecting Arrhenius behavior to the distribution of molecular energies in the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, because students who understand why activation energy controls rate constants have a far more durable kinetics understanding than those who have only memorized the Arrhenius equation. Quantum chemistry — molecular orbital theory, spectroscopic selection rules, the quantum mechanical basis of bonding — is developed with strong emphasis on the conceptual physical picture alongside the mathematical formalism, because physical chemistry quantum mechanics is most effectively learned when the physics and mathematics develop together. My teaching goal is a physical chemistry student who understands thermodynamics, kinetics, and quantum chemistry at a genuinely principled level.
