About Edwin
Hi!
I am a first class honours Music graduate from the University of Manchester's highly respected music department with several years of experience in teaching. I teach piano, singing, theory and aural skills to students of all standards and ages. I am classically trained, but am comfortable teaching most styles of music.
Music should above all be fun, interesting and enriching, and my lessons follow this philosophy. Alongside teaching the foundations for good technique, I try to inspire confidence, passion and creativity in students so that they can give any piece of music their own original interpretations. My ultimate objective is to equip students to control their own musical development and enrich their lives with this wonderful skill.
⦁ I hold a BMus (hons) 1st class from the University of Manchester's highly respected music department.
⦁ I'm a friendly, fun teacher who is passionate about music.
⦁ Specialised in teaching adult students. I can teach students interested in grade examinations or not, and I can teach all genres of music.
⦁ Flexible hours, available during holidays.
⦁ Have any doubts? I give an initial half hour consultation for £10.
⦁ Competitive rate of £22 per half hour and £40 per hour after initial consultation.
My teaching studio has an excellent piano and recording facilities. It is located in Wimbledon, SW197QA. I sometimes travel to a student's home for lessons; please enquire regarding arrangements.
Full biography:
Edwin attained a First Class degree in Music from the highly respected University of Manchester (rated best in the country 2013 and consistently highly ranked in league tables) where he studied singing with Richard Strivens and piano with Hazel Fanning. Before this, he studied at the Royal College of Music for six years. His teachers included Margaret Maguire (voice), Geoffrey Govier (piano) and Philip Bainbridge (trumpet). He also studied music theory there. He has performed in major venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Fairfield Halls, St. Martin in the Fields, the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, the Duomo (Florence), and many others.
Edwin is a bass-baritone singer and has performed many solo recitals. His experience in opera includes playing Bartolo in an acclaimed student performance of Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro', and performing the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Mikado'. He also played the Father in the first act of Humperdinck's 'Hansel and Gretel' and sang in productions of Blow's 'Venus and Adonis' and Handel's 'Semele'.
As a pianist Edwin has performed frequently, including in the Southbank Centre. Furthermore, several of his compositions have been performed in public concerts, including a string quartet workshopped by the Danel Quartet.
He is also an experienced chorister. He has sung with choirs all over the UK and in Ireland, Italy and Hungary. He sang with Manchester University's elite chamber choir, Ad Solem, recently recorded for a BBC 1 documentary. Furthermore, Edwin ran a children's choir and several children's ensembles for two years till his studies in Manchester.
As a teacher, Edwin believes in introducing solid technical foundations to all his students in an enjoyable and approachable manner. He accomodates the particular nature of each student and no two lessons are the same. Where the student shows interest, he enriches lessons with insights into music history and theory so that students can combine good technique with good understanding. He also has a keen interest in the psychology of music and performance and can help students practice efficiently and perform confidently.
Reviews:
"Edwin is a brilliant singing teacher. I took lessons with him, and despite my complete novice status, and lack of musical understanding, he really helped me develop my voice and singing ability. He is very patient and thoughtful teacher. He has a massive musical knowledge and talent, combined with a great talent to teach. He is fun and engaging, and makes the lessons really enjoyable. He obviously loves singing and he helps his students love it too. " - Cat
"Edwin Dizer has been my piano teacher for a while now and I am always impressed by both how well prepared he comes for each lesson (since he always has novel ways of helping me get around tricky compositions) and at how much fun you can have in his lessons!" - Omer
"Edwin Dizer is a great music teacher. He has a vast and wide ranging knowledge of music and theory, and he is an impressive pianist. Crucially for a teacher, he gives encouragement and inspiration.I've had several piano teachers and Edwin is by far the best." - David
"Edwin's structured and methodical approach makes the daunting task of learning to play piano easier and more fun. I found his insights into music theory as well as tips for efficient practice very useful and effective in achieving desired results." - Manish
