I have been tutoring GCSE/ A-level students for 1 year. I can offer exam support and technique, prompt discussion and debate among students, and revise key topics and themes across poetry, novels and drama. I encourage all students to contribute to the class and ask questions whenever they arise. I always tell students that they should feel comfortable enough to share any doubts about the lesson, and that no question is ever a silly question!
Lessons begin with a warm-up activity, typically a question related to the topic to be discussed. I encourage students to contribute to the class verbally, but am equally accepting of those wishing to use the chat function: the most important thing is that all students share their ideas in some way. I try to create a friendly atmosphere to put students at ease and enable them to feel more able to speak out. I want my teaching space to be viewed as an opportunity to share, develop and contribute ideas, and enable students to learn from each other. I tailor my classes based on the individual needs of the student, which could range from GCSE English Language exam support to Personal Statement advise for university. I always ensure that the student is aware of the lesson objectives at the beginning of the class, and to add anything else they may wish to cover for the upcoming class.
I may introduce a fictional or non-fictional text. These can range from D.H. Laurence's 'Sons and Lovers', the personal diary entries of John Steinbeck, 20th century poetry by Philip Larkin, or a news article in The Guardian. I always use authentic texts and may use interactive video material to support my lessons. I try to choose texts that the students may be interested in; for example, if a student has a particular interest in 19th century feminist literature, I can select texts of this nature. Similarly, if the student likes reading Harry Potter, I can try to include this in some way!
