I prefer to build strong, personal relationships with students, because I believe personal relationship is foundation to student success. The more associated the student feels, the more teacher earns respect and consideration, the key ingredients for students to learn well. I teach to the student's strength that helps me to minimise the student weaknesses. I always listen and communicate early and often with parents, that helps me to map a better plan for success. I always believe that, the better lesson planning by tutor leads to student success. I always plan my every session keeping these 6 points in my mind. 1. Outline learning objectives 2. Develop the introduction 3. Plan the specific learning activities (the main body of the lesson) 4. Plan to check for understanding 5. Develop a conclusion 6. Create a practical timeline I have got Engineering degree qualification, which makes me the most appropriate tutor for mathematics subject. I have studied as well trained the simplest mathematics as well as complex one. So, I know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out. I can discuss and introduce the rigour of real-life applications. I can make learning relevant to students' interests, thus create more students who actually care about what they are learning. I am very much aware of National Curriculum of UK and know about the key stages and the assessments, the student would go through after completing each key stage. I always prefer to discuss child's progress with his/her parents by the end of each assessment. That would assist me to meet the expectations of parents.

Find out more about Suhail

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in Mathematics and Engineering began during my early academic years and became a strong passion during my MSc in Electrical Power Systems at the University of Birmingham, UK. I started private tutoring in 2016, focusing on helping students struggling with technical subjects. Over time, I realized that teaching is something I truly enjoy-especially when I can help students gain clarity and confidence in subjects that initially seemed daunting.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialize in Mathematics and Engineering subjects, including Electrical Circuits, Control Systems, Power Electronics, and MATLAB-based simulations. These are my favorite areas to teach, and I find great satisfaction in breaking down complex topics into digestible lessons. I enjoy discussing how mathematical concepts apply in real engineering scenarios. While I'm less drawn to topics that rely solely on memorization, I ensure that even those areas are taught with clarity and relevance.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, during my time at the University of Birmingham, I was fortunate to learn from instructors who combined academic excellence with practical industry insight. Their teaching style-focused on clarity, structure, and real-world applications-greatly influenced my own approach to tutoring.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must be patient, adaptable, and genuinely committed to student success. Clear communication, strong subject knowledge, and the ability to explain complex ideas simply are essential. Understanding each student's learning style and building lessons around their needs is also key to effective tutoring.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my MSc dissertation, I worked on power flow optimization using MATLAB and Simulink. Later, I used those same techniques to help one of my tutees complete their final-year university project. They not only grasped the concepts but applied them successfully to earn top grades-an experience that reinforced the real value of applied teaching.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Many students find Maths and Engineering subjects overwhelming due to the abstract theories and mathematical depth involved. One challenge I continue to address is helping students break down problems into manageable steps. By teaching structured problem-solving techniques and connecting theory to practical applications, I help students move past their fears and build lasting confidence.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a strong passion for teaching Maths and Engineering subjects. These areas excite me because they are logical, structured, and deeply connected to how things work in the real world. I enjoy helping students not just pass exams, but truly understand and appreciate these subjects.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

As a specialist tutor in Maths and Engineering, with nearly a decade of tutoring experience in the UK and a strong academic foundation from the University of Birmingham, I offer structured, personalized lessons that produce results. I focus on building strong conceptual understanding, teaching problem-solving strategies, and tailoring sessions to individual learning needs. I aim to make complex topics approachable and enjoyable.
