About James

I'm a qualified primary teacher with over 14 years of experience, including roles as Assistant Headteacher, English Lead, and Year 4, 5 and 6 specialist. I've supported pupils across a range of abilities, including those with SEND, and have a strong track record in helping children build confidence and make progress, particularly in English. Having led whole-school English and behaviour, and worked as a writing moderator, I bring deep curriculum knowledge and a clear, structured approach to teaching. I love creating personalised, engaging lessons that meet each learner's needs — whether for SATs prep, writing improvement, or developing reading fluency. Lumen Learning - KS2 and 11+ Private Tutoring Unlocking potential in young minds for brighter futures A passionate primary educator with 14 years' of classroom and leadership experience, including roles as Assistant Headteacher, Phase Leader and English Lead, I specialise in KS2 SATs preparation, creative writing and 11+ tuition. I have delivered whole-school training on English and behaviour, and have led interventions that boost confidence, progress and enjoyment of learning. My tutoring style is calm, structured and responsive. I tailor every session to your child's needs, ensuring sessions are engaging, well-paced and rooted in clear objectives. I use a mix of modelling, guided practice and feedback to build independence, boosting both skills and self-esteem. A typical session lasts one hour and might include a warm-up game or activity, followed by introduction to the lesson's content, the opportunity to explore questions practically and through discussion, and modelling of key strategies. This may be followed by guided practice and then independent work with specific and tailored feedback. Parents are provided with a short report following each session, updating you on your child's progress. Lengthier, verbal feedback is provided at key junctures for longer-term clients. I have extensive experience of preparing pupils for KS2 SATs, supporting reading, writing, grammar, spelling and mathematics. As a SATs marker, I have an in-depth knowledge of the tests and test cycle, and, as a writing moderator, a deep knowledge of Year 6 writing, particularly at Greater Depth. I have a strong understanding of the GL 11+ examination and the requirements of local grammar schools. Whether your child needs confidence-boosting tuition, targeted support or stretch and challenge, I help every learner make meaningful progress. I am fully DBS-checked and offer both in-person and online tuition.
