About Jess
I studied Linguistics at the University of York, specialising in the individual sounds that make up an accent (phonetics and phonology). Whilst in York, I also studied French, Hebrew, and Mandarin, and quickly learned to appreciate how challenging learning a foreign language can be!
I then trained at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in Professional Voice Practice, and learned to put my scientific understanding of language into a more practical environment by working with actors on new accents and safe vocal use. I am now a professional voice coach, with clients ranging from 3 - 87 years-old! I work with corporate clients, professional entertainers, and community members.
I gained my TEFL qualification in 2020, and have taught English to students from countries including China, Spain, Thailand, Germany, and Cambodia. I specialise in accent softening, and have worked with students on features of both British and American English.

I believe that there is no such thing as a "wrong" sound in my lessons, but that we should both have clear and achievable goals to work towards. I work with each client to identify their target sounds or phrases, and a timescale that works for us both. I have advanced training in phonetics and phonology, and find using phonetic symbols very helpful. We may decide to learn these symbols together, or avoid using them entirely!
With a background in both linguistics and performing, I approach TEFL and accent training by looking at the whole body. That sound that you have found tricky for years, may in fact be so difficult because of a tongue, jaw, or neck position!
