About Lauren
Lauren Reynolds is a Los Angeles–based painter, educator, and writer whose work explores questions of perception, memory, and philosophy through contemporary painting. With nearly 10 years of experience working in oil paint and as a dedicated teacher for the past few years to students of all ages, she offers instruction grounded in both technical rigor and an active studio practice. Her teaching combines strong foundations in materials, observation, and art methodology with a unique approach that encourages experimentation, critical thinking, and confidence.
Lauren's artistic training began as an apprentice to a master oil painter before continuing her development as a painter at the School of Visual Arts in New York working with Elena Sisto and then at the New York Studio School, where she worked closely with Kyle Staver and Judy Glantzman who helped shape her approach to art making. In 2024, she was Artist-in-Residence at The Oxbow School, mentoring young artists in an immersive studio environment.
As a practicing artist, Lauren's work has been featured in New American Paintings and exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo presentation with One Trick Pony, as well as exhibitions at As-Is Gallery (Los Angeles), Swivel Gallery (New York), Automat Collective (Philadelphia), and Monti8 (Latina, Italy). She is also the co-founder of In Our Own Spaces, an artist salon series in Los Angeles dedicated to fostering dialogue and community among contemporary artists.
Whether working with complete beginners or experienced painters, Lauren is passionate about helping students develop a lasting and intimate relationship to their own work.

I currently offer private lessons at my art studio specializing in oil painting techniques and contemporary studio practices. With nearly 10 years of experience working with oil paint (I was fortunate enough to receive direct training by several incredible contemporary artists) and 5 years of teaching young children, teens, and adults in a variety of ways; as artist-in-residence, 1:1 lessons, and in classrooms. I offer in-depth guidance on materials, mediums, surface preparation, experimental techniques, and painting methodology.
First: We'll start with a conversation. You'll bring examples of your work (even if they're just little doodles!) along with artwork that inspires you. This gives me a sense of where you're at and what excites you.
Second: If you already know what your goals are, great! We'll build a plan together that helps you work toward them. If you're not quite sure yet, that's completely okay too. We can approach our lesson(s) with curiosity and exploration. I have a huge library of art books and lots of different materials we can experiment with together.
Third: We'll get to work. We'll explore new creative interests, build technical skills, establish a sustainable studio practice, and discover what kind of art you want to make.
Alongside technical instruction, I love weaving in art history, philosophy, and critical theory whenever it aligns with your interests. I find these conversations often deepen not only your understanding of art but also your relationship to making it.
More than anything, I care about building a safe, encouraging, and meaningful learning environment. I was incredibly fortunate to learn from wonderful mentors whose generosity and guidance shaped the artist I am today and gave me a lifelong love of painting. I hope to offer that same kind of support to my students, helping them develop a thoughtful, lasting artistic practice and find their own place within the rich lineage of art-making.

When you are in my studio space, we'll have access to all my professional grade materials but I am not able to loan anything, so if you'd like to continue developing your work on your own time, I'd recommend investing in materials and we can discuss where to begin with that!
