About Reed

I am by training a conservationist with years of experience living in the Peruvian Amazon, and am on the way to graduate study in Biology, which may seem quite unconventional for a teacher of English. However, my humanities background, years of accredited essay-writing and creative writing, and experience as a tutor during undergraduate years have effectively honed my skills in teaching English at all levels.

I’m a writing tutor who loves helping students turn messy ideas into clear, confident essays. My style is very practical: we break things down step by step so you actually understand what you’re doing and can repeat it on your own.
When we work together, we start with the big picture: what you’re trying to say, whether your thesis really answers the prompt, and if your argument flows in a way that makes sense to a reader who doesn’t already know what you mean. Only after that do we zoom in to sentences, word choice, and polish. I like using simple, hands-on tools—like reverse outlining, asking targeted questions about your claims, and brainstorming together out loud—so you can see your own writing more clearly and spot what’s working (and what isn’t).

A typical session might start with a quick review of the assignment and your draft (or we’ll brainstorm from scratch if you don’t have one yet). Then we’ll walk through your structure: Which claims are strong? Where does the logic jump? Where could the evidence do more work? From there, we’ll plug in straightforward frameworks for paragraphs, build stronger bridges between your evidence and your analysis, and revise live, with me explaining why I’m suggesting each change.
What tends to help my students most is that I don’t just “fix” their essays for them. I give them reusable tools—like simple paragraph templates (for example: clear claim → specific evidence → explanation that connects it back to the main argument), short self-editing checklists, and quick outlining drills they can do under time pressure. Over time, they start to internalize these patterns, so writing becomes less overwhelming and a lot more predictable.

My lessons are a good fit for high school and college students working on academic essays, college application essays, or advanced papers in the humanities and social sciences—especially people who have strong ideas but struggle to get them organized on the page, to write clearly, or to even get started until the last minute.
