About Charlene
I am a mother of a teen daughter and a professional nanny for over 35 years, but have recently started a puppy training program to help people train their own puppies at home properly.
As an Animal Rescue volunteer, I saw the need for early canine education to prevent bad and even dangerous behaviors in dogs to prevent isolation in the home, surrender/abandonment by owners, and even euthanasia.
My training from the Dunbar Academy and Dr. Ian Dunbar has allowed me to help people know exactly what they need to do to optimize their Puppy's potential to be a confident and well-mannered dog for life.

I have had dogs my whole life because my parents and grandparents had dogs their whole lives. But, even though I learned early in childhood that dogs can be trained to do amazing things. I even read books and took a dog training class with the first dog I raised myself as an adult. Still, I struggled desperately to control her reactive behaviors well into adulthood until the end of her life. I thought it was just her personality or breed and nothing could be done. What I didn't know then is that puppies must be thoroughly trained in socialization and desensitization before 12 weeks of age (18 weeks for some, mostly bigger breed dogs) to be reliably confident and friendly with strangers and strange sounds/sights. If not, many puppies will develop lifelong fears and bad habits that can be annoying or even devastating for the family that has to either become a prisoner in their own home, or in cases, even has to give up or euthanize their dog because of dangerous fear-based behaviors like biting and resource guarding.
The good news is, any breed puppy can become a good dog with proper training during the developmental window prior to 12 to 18 weeks of age. And any dog owner can learn to train their own puppy fairly easily with a few Facetime or Zoom calls with me. I share a wealth of resources through email as well. Since puppies are a clean slate and have not developed any lasting bad behaviors, it is much easier to train a puppy than it is to train an older puppy or dog that has already locked in perspectives and behavior patterns that are much more difficult and sometimes more dangerous to deal with. That's why it's so important to optimize your Puppy's Potential while they are young enough to easily change their minds and behaviors in ways that are suitable for living with humans and other pets
With the purchase of one package, you will have everything you need to set your puppy up for success for the rest of his or her life. I will guide you and coach you through the most important aspects of early canine education.
1. Potty training: house soiling is one of the main reasons people rehome, surrender or abandon their dogs. It's not their fault if they were not trained properly in the first place, so in order to optimize your Puppy's potential, they must learn proper potty etiquette. This includes crate training, and chew training.
2. Crate training: Note that this is important even if you don't plan to keep your dog in a crate at home because there may be times when a crate is necessary. For example, at the vet if they need to stay overnight, at the groomer, for travel purposes or in emergencies like a fire. You want your dog to feel safe and comfortable in a crate so that if he or she ends up having to be in one, they will not be stressed out but instead be able to settle and feel comfortable until it's no longer needed. The goal is for it to feel safe and cozy, not like a prison, but in order for that to happen, they need to be crate trained very young.
3. Bite inhibition: No one can train a dog not to bite. It is part of who they are as a species and it will come naturally to them when they are scared or hurt. Even the most docile and friendly dog can bite if you step on his tail or startle him from a bad dream. The important thing is to teach your dog to bite softly so that when he or she does bite, it will not be a dangerous bite but rather more of a mouthing action without the pressure and force of a real bite. Teaching proper bite inhibition requires allowing your puppy to bite and then offering the proper feedback so that he or she learns how to control their biting appropriately during play, or if the dog is triggered. There are very specific techniques to make sure that your puppy learns proper bite inhibition. Beware, there is a lot of misinformation that could actually make your puppy more dangerous. For example, I worked with a puppy who was about to be returned to the shelter because of her biting problem. Come to find out, the owner said her vet told her to hold the dog's mouth shut when the dog is biting. This is absolutely not the correct way to teach a dog bite inhibition! In fact, it was making the dog more and more aggressive. I was able to correct the issue because she was still very young, but this could have ended very badly for the dog and for the family. My approach comes from Dr. Ian Dunbar and is 100% positive reinforcement. You will not need to use a shock collar or any adverse training tools, just praise, affection, treats, and a system that works.
Puppies love to chew and bite, part of bite inhibition training is tug training games to be used to satisfy teething puppies who need to bite and chew. Tug can also be used as a reward along with treats, praise, and affection. The puppy will learn when to play and when to let go of an object. This is especially important because puppies love to put everything in their mouth and sometimes they get hold of something that could be dangerous for them, or precious to you. Either way, your puppy needs to reliably drop the item upon command and that is something I will teach you to do. You must also give your dog frozen Kongs and chew treats like pig ears when they are in their crate so that they are able to do a lot of the licking and chewing that they need to do for stress relief, teething purposes, and just enjoying themselves in their own personal cozy cubby space.
4. Desensitization: when you see dogs that are scared or reactive, it is because they are being triggered by something they were never properly introduced and desensitized to prior to their 12 weeks of age. If dogs are not properly desensitized to scary sounds, moving objects, etc. before that developmental window closes, you risk having a dog that is scared of those things for life. I will provide you with a list of all the most common scary things and sounds to introduce your puppy to, and I will give you the proper techniques to introduce them in a way that will not overwhelm them and scare them. If you introduce a young puppy to scary sounds and objects incorrectly, you can actually cause the fear and reactivity that you were trying to avoid, so it is very important to do it properly with the correct techniques.
5. Socialization: Puppies must be introduced properly to people of various types and other animals in a way that will keep everybody safe. This is done easily when dogs are puppies, but gets much more complicated and even dangerous as they get older. They must have all of their socialization done before they get their adult teeth.
Of course, there are also plenty of commands that the puppy can learn along the way as well. Commands are less important than the five things I've mentioned, but you can expect your puppy to learn at least 10 or more commands in the process of learning the most important aspects of Puppy Training.
