About Samantha
I am a French and German language teacher with over twenty years of teaching experience. After graduating with a first from Keble College, Oxford, I trained to teach in the English Education system gaining a PGCE. I live in the North Hampshire countryside with my husband and two sons and have been tutoring online from there for nearly 10 years. My specific qualifications are: a first class honours degree in French and German from the University of Oxford and Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the same place. I was raised speaking German from birth, thanks to my German mother and have worked in British secondary and primary schools for ages 4 - 18. I have taught French and German to KS1 / 2 & 3 as well as preparing students for Common Entrance, GCSE, iGCSE, IB, A-level, AS-level, Pre-U and University exams. I also teach adult learners of French and German for casual conversation and business. Currently I only teach online. My students have attended Eton College, Winchester College, Harrogate Ladies' College, Bradfield College, Sherborne School, Cheam Prep School, Reading Grammar School and many other prestigious schools in both the state and private sector. I have helped lots of adults from technical, financial, chemical and nuclear industries to meet their language learning goals for business purposes, personal reasons, holidays, property owned abroad or to complete charitable and fund-raising goals.

In my bespoke language lessons on Skype, I cover all the key areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar. Lessons typically last 1 hour. Where required, I also offer tuition in translation, literary analysis, the preparation of independent research projects and transition from A-level to Oxbridge. Each lesson is tailored to help you meet your language learning goals and to suit your unique learning style. Those not studying for exams will choose the skills and topics they wish to focus on in accordance with their goals. The topics I cover include, but are not limited to: Identity and Culture, Local, National and International and global areas of interest, Study & Employment, the Development of Society, Politics and Culture of France, Germany and French/German speaking countries, Literature and Film, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Historical Events of the 20th century in France and Germany, Holiday and Business German or French, Food and Health. If the topic you wish to learn isn't listed, please contact me to ask. All of the above are taught through the core skills, which we will use every lesson: Listening - whether that's understanding what I say to you or listening to a video or sound recording, every lesson will help you to improve your ability to understand spoken French or German. Speaking - From the very start of your language learning journey, you will practise speaking in the foreign language at your level, whilst we focus on improving your accent, pronunciation, intonation and accuracy. Reading - Every lesson will provide the opportunity to hone your reading skills, whether that be with an authentic text eg menus, signs, brochures or through material written to help you prepare for exams or even literary texts by famous authors. Writing - In our lessons we will learn to communicate clearly and effectively in the written language across all forms of technology - social media, email, text messages etc and also for examination answers - essays, summaries and single sentence answers. Vocabulary - I will use our lessons to help you find effective techniques for collecting and retaining vocabulary that work for you. Grammar - Together we will identify the grammar you need to reach your learning goals. I will make sure that you not only understand the grammar but can also apply it accurately when required. Additionally for those studying for GCSE, post-16 (A-level, A/S-level, IB, Pre-U etc) and university qualifications, I offer the following tuition: Translation - learn how to score well for translation both into and out of the language you are learning. I will teach you techniques that will help you to translate accurately and effectively including chunking, grammatical analysis, use of cognates and more. Literary analysis - I can help you to read, understand and analyse set texts in French and German, and then turn your understanding into essays that will gain marks in school, university and exam settings. I also provide a 'book club' for adult learners, who would like to read and analyse a book with me on a topic of their choosing, in order to extend their knowledge of vocabulary, country and culture. Independent research project - Several post-16 courses (eg A-level, IB) require students to independently research a topic, then present and discuss it. I can help you to prepare for this, and have also successfully helped students at the Universities of Belfast and Reading complete presentations for final year exams. Transition from A-Level to Oxbridge - Congratulations! You've landed a place at one of the UK's top universities to study French or German. Your summer reading list probably seems huge and scary right now. A bespoke summer course with me will leave you with the skills to read long literary texts in French or German and get your university journey off to a flying start. Together we will read the most difficult texts on your summer list, make notes and manage vocabulary. Leaving you prepared and free to enjoy freshers' week.

Samantha has been tutoring me in German weekly since summer 2019.
