About Dr-Darren

I am a fully qualified English teacher with over 30 years’ teaching experience across secondary, further and higher education. I teach English Language, English Literature and Media Studies at GCSE and A Level, and also have extensive experience teaching Film Studies, Sociology and Communication Studies.

I have taught students from Year 7 through to undergraduate level and adult learners, so I have a strong understanding of the different stages of the educational journey and how students’ skills and confidence develop over time.

I have experience as an examiner and am familiar with AQA, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, Edexcel and Pearson specifications. I can therefore help students understand both the subject itself and the particular demands of their course and exam board.

My own background also brings something different to my teaching. Alongside being a fully qualified teacher, I am a published academic, writer and poet, as well as a filmmaker and artist whose work has been exhibited and screened internationally. I have a PhD from a Russell Group university and have published both academic and creative work.

My creative background has given me a practical, ‘hands-on’ understanding of and insight into the creative process, enabling me to better explain and discuss key aspects of language and literature, such as narrative, character, imagery and structure. Thinking in this way helps my students understand texts not simply as things to analyse, but as things that have been consciously created. It helps them break texts down and recognise how each element contributes to the overall impact of the novel, play etc.

I also have extensive experience supporting students with SEND and have many success stories involving students who have gone on to achieve great things. I am used to adapting my lessons to meet my students’ individual needs and am only too happy to do all I can to find an approach that works. Above all, I know when to listen!

At the heart of everything I do, is a passionate belief in fostering the learning and ensuring the success of my students through constant encouragement, monitoring individual progress, and helping them with target setting.

Ultimately, I genuinely care about the people I teach and am confident that my teaching style can make a positive difference to students with very different needs, abilities and starting points.

My lessons are structured but responsive. I usually begin by establishing what the student wants to achieve, what they are already confident about and identifying exactly where they need help. From there, I tailor the lesson to the individual rather than applying the same approach to everyone.

A typical lesson might involve close analysis of a poem, novel, play, article or media text; developing an argument; planning or improving an essay; working through an exam question; analysing language, structure and representation; or exploring how different writers approach a particular theme.

I believe very strongly that teaching is a dialogue. I do not simply talk at students or give them information to memorise. I encourage them to ask questions, test ideas, make connections and develop their own interpretations. I listen carefully to what they say and continue the dialogue by asking them to explore the evidence supporting their ideas and consider other possible interpretations. This not only helps students communicate and develop their ideas more effectively but also deepens their understanding of the text and builds confidence in their own judgement.

Confidence is enormously important. Some students already have a strong foundation and want help reaching the highest grades; others may have lost confidence, fallen behind or simply feel that they “don’t get” English and are struggling to find a way forward. I enjoy working with both. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing a student suddenly realise that they are capable of far more than they imagined. They begin to believe in themselves and often go on to achieve results they never thought possible.

Lessons are normally one hour and can focus on exam preparation, coursework, essay writing, textual analysis, developing subject knowledge and skills, or tackling specific areas where a student feels less confident or needs more guidance.

Above all, I want students to feel listened to, supported and increasingly confident in their own ability.

The free 30-minute introductory session provides an opportunity for students, parents and carers to discuss the reasons for seeking tuition and what the student would like to achieve. In order for me to provide the most effective support, it is helpful to know the specific subject or subjects, year group, exam board, current level and target grade, together with any particular areas of difficulty or skills the student would like to develop. We can also discuss preferred ways of learning, any relevant additional learning needs, and upcoming exams, assessments or coursework.
