About Lois

I gained my first degree in English Literature with a First-Class Honours. Upon completing my degree I accepted a teaching position in Vietnam where I taught young children, teens and adults exam based English language classes. Having developed a passion for teaching whilst abroad I embarked upon the Teach First program after returning home. I completed my PGCE at Northumbria University and received QTS in 2014 whilst teaching English at a secondary school in Middlesbrough. I found that many of the students at this school were disengaged and so I gained a lot of experience inspiring and motivating young children who lack confidence and feel discouraged.

I then moved to London where I took a job as an English and media teacher at a secondary school in West London. Whilst in this role all my lesson observations were rated good or outstanding and, because of this success, after my third year, I was promoted to Head of Media. Whilst in this position an overhaul of the syllabus meant that I had to choose an appropriate exam board and oversee the development of new teaching material. As a consequence, I am very familiar with all the GCSE and A Level exam specifications in both English and media studies.

I am passionate about reigniting a love of learning in my students because I love learning myself. Whilst working full time as a secondary school teacher I completed my second degree in Natural Sciences with a First-Class Honours. I then joined the education department at Chelsea Physic Garden where I used this degree to develop and teach both one off biology workshops and term long biology and horticultural courses to both children and adults. I then embarked on an MSc in Plant and Fungal Taxonomy, Conservation and Evolution which I completed this year with a Distinction.

Whilst completing this master’s degree I could not work as classroom teacher but neither could I leave behind my love of teaching. Thus, I began tutoring and now enjoy delivering more personalised learning experiences on all the subjects I am both highly qualified to teach and extremely passionate about.

I aim to make my tuition sessions both engaging and informative with all sessions being tailored for the individual. This student centered approach ensures that we identify all areas where the student feels less confident or is struggling, before we work together to fill these gaps so that the student achieves the best results possible.

I am a qualified teacher and my classroom experience means I am very familiar with both the English and media GCSE and A Level exam specifications. Thus, I largely tutor students working towards these qualifications. However, I can also help students of other subjects who require help with specific skills such as essay writing.

Lessons are typically an hour in length and delivered in person but I am happy to extend lesson times if needed and lessons can be delivered online if this is preferred.
