I care deeply about teaching and learning in general and the teaching of mathematics is a particular passion for me. I help students gain confidence in their own mathematical ability when they have been convinced by the academic system that they are incapable of doing well in the subject. I can also help higher attaining students to challenge themselves and aspire to become even better. I normally offer sessions online now. I am able to travel a limited distance for in-person sessions but there is an extra charge for this. My first session is provided free of charge and I use this session to understand the needs of prospective pupils. At the end of the session, I have a frank and honest discussion with the pupil and/or their guardians. I use these conversations to listen to the concerns of the pupils and/or their guardians and present an outline of my assessment of the student's areas of strengths and weaknesses. I also suggest a course of action to help the pupil move forward. During the last two decades I have worked with many hundreds of students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level. I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week. It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always enjoyed studying Maths and Science. My first introduction to tutoring was when I was asked by my dad to help my younger brother with a Maths topic. I was only 12 or 13 at the time. I remember the shared feeling of joy when I was able to help my brother understand something he had found difficult and frustrating. From then on, I started tutoring regularly and have been doing it regularly for the last 30+ years now. First it was my brothers and then my cousins and then family friends. Eventually, I started doing it professionally.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily teach Maths up to 'A' levels and Physics, Chemistry and Biology up to GCSE. However, I am interested in a variety of subjects including Business, Economics, Politics, History, Geography etc. The subjects which I am a novice at are related to the Arts: Music, Fashion, Painting, and Photography etc.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was blessed to have many great teachers throughout my life from the kind teacher who first encouraged me to learn my times tables in primary school to my wise and experienced mentor who guided me when I was working on my Master's thesis a few years ago.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe good tutors must first and foremost have faith that all their students will be able to progress and become better when they apply themselves. They must back this up with patience when students find something difficult to grasp, understanding that students are still children who will sometimes lose concentration and determination to help their charges succeed. Finally, tutors must be very knowledgeable and passionate about pedagogy in general and their subject in particular.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

There have been many instances where I have help students understand something they were sure they had no chance of learning. These are my favourite moments because I not only get to help my students learn that one topic but also help them gain confidence in their own abilities.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The main difficulty I face is challenging many students' belief that they are "rubbish" or "no good" at Maths. Often this is a belief that has been built up over years for a variety of reasons. Getting students to accept that they can succeed if they work with dedication and with the right guidance is sometimes the hardest part of my job.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love learning and teaching in general. I am naturally curious and inquisitive and want to know how and why things work or worked and happen or happened. So I am at my happiest when I am sharing knowledge, whether it is as a student or as a teacher or as a peer.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I would not call myself a Superprof. I can only claim to be a passionate teacher who genuinely believes there is always so much more to learn and who is dedicated to doing his best for his students.
