About Ryan

I am a qualified UK teacher, former Head of English, school leader, exam marker and specialist tutor, and the founder of Ryan Varco Tuition, with more than 12 years’ experience in education.

Alongside leading English across schools, I have worked as Head of Maths and Head of Key Stage, as well as a curriculum developer and teacher coach. I have trained teachers, developed curricula and supported school improvement, giving me a deep understanding of how strong reading and writing skills develop over time.

I now provide personalised online English tuition to UK and international students, helping children become more confident and capable readers, writers and communicators. I work with students who need to close specific gaps as well as high-achieving pupils who need greater challenge and preparation for selective schools.

My approach is highly individual. Rather than following a generic programme, I identify each student's strengths, misconceptions and development areas and create a clear learning pathway around their needs.

English is also a major part of my work preparing students for competitive school entrance. Students I have supported have secured offers from schools including Eton College, Westminster School, Winchester College, St Paul’s School, St Paul’s Girls’ School, North London Collegiate School, King’s College School Wimbledon, Wycombe Abbey, Brighton College and Sevenoaks School.

I want students not only to improve their immediate results, but to develop the vocabulary, comprehension, written expression, confidence and independence that will support them throughout their education.

About the lesson

Every student's English needs are different, so my one-hour online lessons are carefully tailored to their current attainment, goals and areas for development.

I provide specialist support in:

• Creative and descriptive writing
• Persuasive and transactional writing
• Grammar, punctuation and spelling
• Sentence structure and written expression
• Essay planning and organisation
• Proofreading and editing
• English entrance-exam preparation

Your English service specifically focuses on reading and text analysis, vocabulary and inference, written expression, grammar, spelling, punctuation and ambitious vocabulary.

For reading, I teach students how to move beyond retrieving obvious information and develop the deeper skills required to interpret vocabulary, infer meaning, analyse evidence and explain their ideas clearly.

For writing, I help students develop ideas before refining sentence construction, vocabulary choices, organisation and technical accuracy. The aim is not simply to make writing sound more sophisticated, but to help students communicate ideas with clarity, precision and purpose.

My teaching is calm, structured and carefully scaffolded. I provide appropriate challenge while breaking difficult skills into manageable steps, helping students understand exactly what they need to do to improve. This reflects the structured, scaffolded approach described in my wider teaching philosophy.

For international students, lessons can also address differences in vocabulary, grammar, written conventions and the expectations of UK-style English assessments, where these are relevant to the student's goals.

My personalised English teaching has contributed to successful applications to schools including City of London School, City of London School for Girls, Godolphin and Latymer School, Guildford High School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, Hampton School, Dulwich College, Latymer Upper School, Highgate School and Alleyn’s School.

Most importantly, I want students to become increasingly independent: able to analyse a text thoughtfully, communicate ideas confidently and recognise how to improve their own work.
