About Jodie

I am a recent graduate in Molecular Biology from the University of Sheffield, where I obtained an upper second class degree. Therefore, my specialist tuition subject would be Biology but I am also happy to tutor in other subjects to GCSE level, as well as university application and advice.

Whilst at university, I worked extensively at a Student Ambassador where I was able to gain experience working with young people aged between 10-18 years. Sessions often revolved university, from introducing the idea of higher education to primary school children, to providing application help to A-level students. My role would be to engage with the young people, discussing ideas with them and making sure they felt comfortable throughout the day. I also presented GCSE workshops to Year 11 classes where we worked on developing self belief and motivation, as well as introducing tips and tricks to prepare for exams.

However, my role also involved more subject based academic sessions. I was a Science Revision Ambassador for Sheffield's Medicine and Dentistry access programmes, where I would work with small groups of A-level students to help them revise their Biology and Chemistry. I also volunteered for the charity Team Up where I would be taken into a local secondary school once a week to tutor a small group of Year 9 pupils in Maths. These pupils were chosen based on their lack of enthusiasm to do well in their GCSE's so this opportunity really challenged and enhanced my tutoring abilities as they could prove difficult to engage.

I now work at UCL as a Graduate Ambassador within the Widening Participation department. This involves planning and executing events for potential students who are academically able to attend university but are from underrepresented backgrounds. I find this role highly rewarding and it has provided me with a greater understanding of what university admissions tutors are looking for in applicants.

As I have experienced the benefit of Widening Participation programmes and tuition myself when I was a student, I understand the importance of a tutor being friendly and approaching, whilst also maintaining authority and professionalism.
