About Karen
I have taught many different grades throughout my 35-year teaching career. I have been a 3rd-grade teacher, a study skills teacher, a psychology teacher, and a reading specialist. I have also tutored students of all ages in reading and swimming! While I am "officially retired", I am in no way ready to give up my passion for teaching. I'm excited to get to know you and share my love of books and learning with you!

Reading: Compare and Contrast
I typically begin my lessons by telling my students the objective and giving them a brief overview. I'll then give them an example. In this case, I would ask, "How are cats and dogs alike"? Then, after listing 5 comparisons, then I would ask for the differences. We would then go on to read a story about new information to the students about how sharks and dolphins are similar and different. While we are reading, the students will be underlining the similarities and differences as they hear them. We will stop periodically and check in to discuss what they have highlighted. I keep students actively engaged throughout the lesson.
