About Patrick
I am aware that everyone learns differently, but over five year’s experience of coaching tennis to pupils of varying ages and abilities has taught me how to adapt to individuals’ preferred learning techniques. In maths and physics this can manifest in using lots of real-world examples and scenarios to explain otherwise abstract theories. During my time as a coach, I have worked in English language summer schools, teaching and working with teenagers with limited English abilities from countries whose language I don't speak. Although initially challenging, I soon found ways to ease communication, primarily by finding a common ground in understanding and expanding outwards. Again, I believe this approach is applicable to the teaching of maths and physics, as my first step will always be to establish where my students are in their learning and how we can then begin to expand and progress.

Hi, I'm Patrick, I’m currently in the second year of my integrated masters degree in physics and am looking to give lessons and support in physics and maths for all ages and qualifications up to and including A2.
Physics is the science of the universe; it explains everything from the interactions of the fundamental particles to the behaviour of unimaginably vast galaxies and stars. Maths is the language of physics and is much more than just a tool, it can be both beautifully simple and extremely powerful. It is this love of maths and the amazing journey of discovery upon which physics can take us that causes me to enjoy my degree so thoroughly. I am aware that many people find maths and physics to be very challenging and that this can lead to them struggling to enjoy the subjects. I find this a great shame and thus find it very rewarding to be able to help people to not only use and understand, but to be able to enjoy these two passions of mine.
When I was revising at school, no one really mentioned revising from past papers; it was all about looking back through notes. However, I found that I didn't take information in just by reading pages of formulae, instead, I learn, and revise, by practising the subject, whether that's by doing all the past papers I can get my hands on, redoing past assignments or finding practice questions on the internet. This is reflected in the way that I teach, I'll start the lesson with a quick recap of what we have previously covered, supported by a question to ensure that the knowledge and skills have been retained. Then, we'll move onto a discussion about the new topic; what you already know about it, where your strengths and weaknesses lie and what you'd like to focus on, this will be followed by working through a question together, in order to demonstrate the key skills. After this, I'll present a question for you to tackle individually and offer support as needed. To finish a lesson, we'll summarise what was learnt and often I'll advise some practice questions as independent study, which you can ask about in the next session.
