About Flanders
Hi,
My name is Debra, and I have been teaching for just over 8 years. I have a certification in Special Education and Dyslexia Practitioner. I have worked with students from kindergarten to 12th grade.
I am a mother of an amazing son and stepdaughter. I am married to my amazing husband, and we live with our two cats.
I loved teaching and seeing students light up when they reached a goal. I was a student who struggled with reading and writing in school. With the right teachers, I have been able to share that with students and watch them strive to reach their goals.

I teach with hands-on materials, and I use a multi-sensory approach, which helps with brain mapping.
For students learning math, I suggest 30-45 minutes per lesson. We would review previously learned items during a five-minute work-up. Then I would explicitly teach a new concept, we would then practice it together, and finally you would try it on your own. For young learners, I incorporate games to help motivate them to master a skill.
Reading, I use Orton-Gillingham methods. Each lesson is 1 hour long at least twice a week. It starts with a review, interactive teaching of a new concept, practice of the new concept, and lastly reading a passage with review and new concepts
Writing, after determining the students' abilities, I would build on them each lesson using either their work for school or working with the student to write a variety of formats and different types of written expression (essay, letter, story, opinion).
