About Joel
I bring a strong academic and professional background to my tutoring. I hold both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University, one of the top engineering programs in the world. With years of experience applying STEM concepts in real-world settings, I offer students a structured, reliable, and results-driven approach to learning. I take professionalism seriously - each lesson is thoughtfully prepared, tailored to individual goals, and conducted in a respectful, supportive environment. Students can expect clear communication, patience, and a strong focus on developing true understanding. Since I also speak Spanish, Italian, French (DELF-B1 & DELF-B2), Brazilian Portuguese (CELPE-Bras), and some German - I also accommodate students living in different time zones and countries. My goal is not only to help students succeed academically but also to equip them with the skills and confidence to excel long after our lessons are over.

As a tutor, I focus on building a deep understanding of core concepts rather than memorization. My teaching method emphasizes clear explanations, real-world examples, and step-by-step problem-solving strategies to strengthen intuition and confidence. I tailor lessons to each student’s needs by identifying gaps in understanding and adapting the pace accordingly. A typical lesson begins with a quick review of prior material to reinforce knowledge, followed by introducing new topics through examples and practice problems. I like to break down complex ideas into manageable parts, and I always encourage students to ask questions and think critically about the “why” behind each step. What sets me apart is my interdisciplinary background - I hold both a BS and MS in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University - and my ability to connect STEM subjects to real-world applications in science, engineering, and technology. I also emphasize building problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom. My lessons are designed for middle school to high school students who are preparing for advanced coursework, improving grades, or building a strong STEM foundation for college and beyond. If time permits, I am also happy to share insights from my experience applying to and studying at Stanford as both an undergraduate and graduate student.

Prices are adjusted for teaching materials, and to match competitive teaching rates of top-10 university tutors. I can also provide advice on the college application process and getting into Stanford as an undergrad. Prices are also adjusted in order to account for any time zone differences if you're located in a different time zone away from Los Angeles (i.e. Brazil, Mexico, France, Switzerland, Germany, Europe) and interested in receiving tutoring from a top-5 university (Stanford) Grad. Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you live in a different time zone and are interested in learning Math or Chemistry in French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, or German from a Stanford grad - I accommodate international learners with different time zones and language preferences.
