About Mario
I'm a PhD researcher at the University of Exeter, working on novel applications of AI and computer vision in marine ecology and conservation monitoring. My day-to-day research involves exactly the kind of work I tutor: wrangling messy real-world data in R and Python, choosing and justifying statistical methods, building and evaluating models, and communicating results clearly to non-specialists.
Before starting my PhD I spent several years working in marine research, developing data analysis pipelines and software tools used by ecologists and conservation practitioners. Helping colleagues get unstuck on their stats and code has been a consistent thread throughout - I genuinely enjoy the moment when a method that seemed impenetrable suddenly clicks.
Outside of research I spend as much time as possible outdoors: climbing, hiking, surfing, and generally making the most of being based in the South West.

My lessons are aimed primarily at undergraduate finalists, Masters students, and PhD researchers who need to apply statistics and programming to real research data, typically for dissertations, theses, or papers. I also welcome early-career researchers wanting to upskill, and motivated A-level students preparing for university-level work.
I take a problem-first approach: rather than working through generic textbook exercises, we use your actual data, your actual research question, and your actual code. My job is to make sure you understand why you're choosing a particular method, not just how to run it. Sessions typically combine short explanations, live coding in R or Python, and guided practice where you drive and I help you debug your thinking.
Lessons usually run for one hour, though two-hour sessions work well when tackling a specific analysis end-to-end. Available lesson formats include one-off methodology consultations, weekly support through a dissertation, or short intensive blocks before a deadline.
My background: I'm a PhD researcher at the University of Exeter working on AI applications in marine ecology, with several years of experience using R and Python for ecological data analysis, statistical modelling, and machine learning. I've supported colleagues and students with statistical methods throughout my research career and have published work applying these techniques to real-world environmental data.
