About Theodore

I have been a teacher for roughly six years. I taught abroad (in China) for four and a half years and have worked as a teacher trainer for an online English teaching company.

I am currently attending the University of Redlands for a Masters of Learning and Teaching degree, along with a single subject teaching credential for English.

My educational philosophy has three major components:

First, I believe that developing critical literacy is a very important part of education. As a teacher of English language arts it is my primary objective to help students develop the ability to think, read, and write critically in response to the information they will encounter in this world. The ability to understand, criticize, and dissect the language we encounter is a vital skill that can positively affect one’s path to success. Critical literacy is also an important part of becoming a contributing citizen of a society.

Second, I believe in the use of rich tasks and authentic learning in order to help students develop a proficiency in subject-specific literacy. Rich tasks assigned in an authentic learning focused classroom are the best ways to improve the academic literacy of students. Not only do they contextualize what textbook learning and other “traditional” forms of teaching leave abstracted, they closely resemble the universally understood progression of language development. By keeping students engaged in the subject matter, and expecting them to encounter and solve real-world problems, students are given the opportunity to experience life as a working professional.

Third, I believe in the importance of paradigms, both individual and educational. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to do as much as I can to make a difference in the individual paradigms of the students I encounter in my classrooms. The individual paradigm is partially, if not mostly, a product of our educational paradigm. I have a somewhat unconventional educational paradigm, as I strive to teach in a transactive, and even transformative paradigm. Rather than having my students be the passive receptacles of information that I transfer to them, I require my students to actively engage with the subject matter, contextualizing the material within personal knowledge, experience, and understanding.
