About Zach

I am a 29-year-old student at The University of California, Irvine currently training to become an English teacher. I'm trained in upper-division academic English, literary criticism, creative writing, and journalism. On campus, I regularly assist students who need help with essays and other writing assignments.

As students, I take your time and money very seriously. I know how stressful and time-consuming it is to be a student. Any session with me will be efficient and straight to the point. Many tutors are young college students only a year or so out of high school. As an older individual, I bring a certain maturity to my writing and my professional interactions.

About the lesson

Come as you are... I always meet students right where they're at, working with them to design an individualized learning plan that revolves around their learning style and the areas most in need of improvement. My lessons are Socratic, which depend upon conversation far more often than lecture, aiming to engage each student as a person first, and a student second. I take seriously the personhood of learners and refuse to reduce education to mechanics or quick "answer-finding". Such is especially unhelpful when writing, as such requires a measure of intellectual autonomy and creativity.

Theses lessons are intended primarily for those needing help with essays and/or writing assignments. After identifying key problem areas, I'll explain and demonstrate concrete ways to fix issues through verbal and written examples. Our lesson will be interactive, and I'll stay away from boring, redundant lectures. A consistent back-and-forth will insure that you receive the precise help you need for the given assignment. Additionally, I will provide detailed margin notes, making your independent work more efficient and effective beyond the lesson.

Academic writing is the focus, but I'm more than able to assist with the many disciplines that run alongside English. Writing is inherently interdisciplinary, with research, history, philosophy, literature, logic, and art being among the numerous fields of inquiry a writer will encounter in their academic career. As a student, you may not struggle with composition, but you may be asked to engage a topic utterly alien to you. This too, I can guide you through.
