About Canetra

My Vision Statement: My vision is to improve every student’s ability to become a better reader, writer, listener and speaker so that each student’s skills in communication and language will grow and flourish.

About me: this is my 27th year in Education, and my 8th year teaching middle school. My teaching certifications are in English (Grades 7-12), ESL Certification (Grades EC-12), Dyslexia (EC-12) and Special Education (Grades EC-12).

I hold an associate degree in General Studies from Austin Community College and dual Bachelor's degrees in English with Technical Writing Certification and in Spanish from Texas State University-San Marcos. I spent the final semester of my Spanish degree in a study abroad program at Monterrey Tech University in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

I have been married for 28 years. My husband and I share four children together: ages 29, 23, 13, and 11. I enjoy writing, event planning, advocating for youth, and serving at my church.

About the lesson

I teach targeted lessons that build literacy skills in reading fluency, reading comprehension, and written expression.

My teaching methods use learning targets and success criteria that are designed with objectives to be met within a 30-45 minute time frame, with an optional 10-15 for intervention or enrichment components.

A typical lesson includes a warm-up, the learning target and success criteria, a mentor text, a performance of understanding from the student, and a closure or wrap-up of the lesson.

My lessons are engaging and can be differentiated for all learning styles and abilities. My lessons target grades 6-12.
