About Sam
About Me I’m an experienced maths educator, currently teaching at Derby College, specialising in post-16 learners who are often retaking qualifications or returning to education. Many of my students have had negative experiences with maths in the past, didn’t achieve the grade they hoped for, and arrive in class feeling frustrated or disengaged. This is the environment in which I thrive. With over 10 years of experience in education—from primary and secondary schools to adult learners—I bring a calm, inclusive, and patient approach that helps students rebuild confidence and see maths in a new light. I also have a background as a support worker, which helps me connect with a wide range of learning styles and needs, including neurodivergent students. Above all, I believe that everyone can succeed in maths with the right guidance. My role is to help you discover that success—at your pace, in your own way.

Maths in My Method – Tutor Profile I’m an experienced maths tutor currently teaching at Derby College, with over 10 years in education spanning primary, secondary, and Further Education. I specialise in supporting post-16 learners, adult returners, and students who have barriers to learning—particularly those who are neurodivergent or have previously struggled with maths. My Teaching Methodology I use inclusive, student-centred approaches grounded in empathy and high expectations. I break down concepts using real-life contexts, multi-sensory techniques, and scaffolded steps to build confidence and understanding. Lessons are adapted to each learner’s strengths and challenges, with a strong focus on overcoming maths anxiety. Lesson Structure Typical sessions last 60 minutes and are structured around clear objectives, engaging tasks, and opportunities for guided practice and reflection. Lessons can be adapted for shorter attention spans or specific exam preparation. Qualifications & Experience I hold a Social Science degree with a strong foundation in statistical analysis. I’ve been trained by exam boards to identify and correct common assessment errors, which supports a thorough, exam-savvy teaching approach. My experience as a support worker also enriches my practice with additional skills in communication and differentiation.
